Simon Yates to lead hike at Keswick Mountain Festival

Visitors to the Keswick Mountain Festival will get the chance to go on a hike with one of the most famous names on the mountaineering circuit, Simon Yates.

Mr Yates is best known for cutting the rope of his stricken friend Joe Simpson during a climb in the Peruvian Andes, a tale which was recounted in the book and film Touching the Void. The mountaineering community has always been divided over whether Mr Yates did the right thing, so his talk at the event is sure to be popular.

In addition to this, it has been announced that Mr Yates will take a group of hikers up Hall's Fell Ridge on Blencathra. It will form part of the Britain on Foot campaign, an initiative designed to get more people up off the sofa and out in the countryside for some exercise. Four easier Britain on Footwalks will also be available as part of the festival, catering for those with less experience.
Lucy Scrase, Keswick Mountain Festival director, said: "Our hike programme is really diverse and exciting. We have over 30 guided walks that will take people to some of the most scenic and spectacular locations in the country, and along the shores of Cumbria's wonderful lakes.

"We are delighted that Simon Yates will lead a walk on iconic Blencathra and proud to support Britain on Foot throughout the festival. It is an important campaign that will use the outdoors to inspire the people of the UK to lead active, healthy lives."

Other guest speakers at the Keswick Mountain Festival, which runs from May 15th-19th, include popular television personality and outdoor expert Monty Halls, as well as Karen Darke, who overcame paralysis following a climbing accident at the age of 21 to win medals in the Paralympic Games.

If you want to experience this fantastic outdoor festival, booking a stay at one of YHA's great-value local hostels is the ideal way to make the most of your time in the Lakes.
