Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Holmbury

Give a huge round of applause for our first ever Hostel of the Week; our historic rural retreat YHA Holmbury! If you dream of a traditional friendly Youth Hostel with loads of personality, ramblers with a story to tell and the sound of owls hooting outside - look no further.

YHA Holmbury is nestled in over 4,000 acres of woodland to explore, and makes the perfect base for anyone in love with the great outdoors.

Location

Sitting just 30 miles from central London and easily accessible by car, our secluded hidden gem welcomes even the muddiest of hostellers with enthusiasm! The hostel stands in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by scenic woodland walking and cycling routes, and is just right for forgetting the bustle of city life and stress of modern technology. With so much nature and open access countryside to discover, you don't need your mobile phone signal and Wi-Fi here. You can even camp outside in the beautiful unspoilt grounds around the hostel - just don't forget your torch for dark toilet trips!

History

YHA Holmbury has over 70 years of hostelling under its belt, celebrating it 80th Birthday this year (it opened 12th July 1935) - it was one of the first ever purpose-built hostels, so expect a warm welcome to the YHA family with generations of regulars and a cosy home-from-home vibe. There are squishy green sofas to relax into and distinctive outdoorsy wall murals in the lounge; perfect for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers to chill out with after an active day in the woods. The 1930s hostel has recently benefited from a lot of TLC and a fresh lick of paint, and the bright and colourful dorms are full of character. If you're feeling peckish and want an authentic hostel experience, why not join us for Supper Club? There's nothing like sitting around the dinner table with other travellers sharing stories about your day and there's a fully licenced bar here too.

Cycling

Cyclists of all abilities have everything they need for an activity-packed day, with bike hire and cycling activities from YHA Holmbury's partners All Biked Up and a repair shop nearby. The Hurt Wood's mountain bike tracks have even attracted the Junior Olympic Cycling Team to stay with us! Or get your ramble on with a leisurely trek up Holmbury Hill to see the breath-taking panoramic views of the Surrey countryside. There's an outside basin for cleaning your muddy boots, plus a handy laundry and drying room to keep you feeling fresh for your next adventure.

Family

If you're coming with kids, they won't be able to resist the grounds - they're perfect for long days playing outside and getting muddy. YHA Holmbury is also close to Chessington World of Adventure, Thorpe Park and Bockett's Farm, so your family day out is sorted. Or, if you're after some culture, you can't beat the nearby Polesden Lacey house or Clandon park mansion for a grand day out. So what are you waiting for? Book a stay at Surrey's best kept secret here!
