Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Bryn Gwynant

Need some peace and quiet? Sometimes you've just got to escape from it all and climb a mountain! YHA Bryn Gwynant boasts one of our best views in North Wales - overlooking the dramatic ridges of Snowdon and the depths of Llyn Gwynant lake. Whether you're climbing the crags or making a splash with watersports, our quirky Victorian mansion makes an ideal base for a Snowdonia National Park holiday. Gaze into those mountains and feel yourself relax.

The Hostel

From its oversized wooden Giant's Chair overlooking the lake (perfect for memorable family photos) to its distinctive Welsh slate exterior, YHA Bryn Gwynant is full of character. This secluded hostel was originally built in 1834 as a summer house for Victorians hunting in the surrounding woodland and we welcomed it to YHA in 1950. The hostel has gorgeous period features like carved fireplaces, elaborate wooden windows with stunning views, polished flagstone floors, and a lack of distracting smartphone signal. Kids visiting us from the city feel like they've come to another world - you're bound to be inspired to try some new outdoor experiences here. There are plenty of comfy places to relax and you'll meet lots of families, adventurers and groups appreciating the natural beauty here. After a hard day exploring, why not share stories and a hearty meal around the table at our communal Supper Club overlooking the lake? You can even sample our local Welsh ales - look out for favourite, Welsh Pride - and please, don't get us started on the stars at night.

Outdoor Activities

Along with our busier YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass, you can't beat our Hostel of the Week for walking up Snowdon - there's a ridge leading up the mountain well in view. The rocky and challenging Watkin Path starts very close to our hostel and you don't need to drive miles from us to find amazing adventures. YHA Bryn Gwynant sits in 42 acres of land, packed with beautiful woodland trails, so families can spend the day in the great outdoors. If you love reaching new heights, the area is a climber's paradise and there are crags all over Snowdon to triumph over. Or check out the impressive slate quarries in Llanberis; one of the "hardest and weirdest" climbs in Wales. Can't wait to get out on that lake and put our drying room to the test? Watersports fans can hire kayaks and canoes from the top end of the lake, only a mile away from us. The bravest adventurers of all can fling themselves from Elephant Rock into Llyn Gwynant, taking care not to disturb the feisty seagulls who nest there. Whatever you decide to do in the Snowdonia National Park, you'll sleep well at night.

Family Attractions

From the mightiest of Welsh castles to adrenaline-packed days out, Snowdonia isn't just about climbing every mountain. Venture a few miles from YHA Bryn Gwynant for a tour in the magnificent Sygun Copper Mines and remind yourself of the difference between stalactites and stalagmites. The biggest zipline in Europe is near to us too (it's not as scary as you think, go for it!), so you can zoom through the mountains at high speed. For something completely different, head to Bounce Below and discover a cavern full of trampolines and tourists who can't believe their luck. For traditional family fun, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways offer fantastic experiences for lovers of steam, or if you're a keen twitcher there's great birdwatching all around the hostel. The famous Caernarfon Castle is a must for history-lovers and always has imaginative exhibitions and fun events to take part in. Remember, if you're relying on public transport for an outing, keep in mind that we're in deepest, darkest Snowdonia and check the bus times in advance.

Sporting Events

Want to get competitive on the rocks? Our Snowdonia National Park attracts athletes from far and wide and YHA Bryn Gwynant makes a great base whether you're taking part or observing. The epic Snowdon Trail Marathon covers 26 miles of spectacular panoramic views and tough climbs - don't panic, there IS a half marathon. Or cheer athletes on at the Slateman Triathlon as they bike, run and swim through mountains. Wales' strong bond with trad climbing is celebrated at Llanberis' Tradfest too, and our staff know all the best places to burn off some steam on Snowdon. So what are you waiting for? Get away from it all and book a scenic break at YHA Bryn Gwynant.
