Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Brecon Beacons

Looking for a haven in the Welsh wilderness? YHA Brecon Beacons feels as welcoming as walking into an old friend's home. Our cosy farmhouse has breathtaking views and a trail to Pen-y-Fan right from the doorstep. Just an hour from Cardiff, we're easy to get to and have everything from outdoor activities to a whisky distillery nearby. With our roaring fire, hearty meals and friendly staff - you'll feel ready for a National Park adventure in no time.

The Hostel

From twinkly candles to a stone fireplace stacked with logs, we go all out to make you feel at home at YHA Brecon Beacons. Our 19th century farmhouse was rebuilt with love by YHA Volunteers in the 1970s, transforming it from a derelict building into a homely hostel. We sit conveniently near a main road and there's lots of public transport nearby; perfect for spending a cheeky weekend in the wild. With so many adventures on your doorstep, let us fuel you up with a wholesome home-cooked meal - we won an award for our atmospheric Supper Club. After a day up a mountain, our lounge with comfy sofas is a great place to share stories or wind down with a good book. Look out for quirky extras like board game murals, wooden beams and rustic tiled floors. You'll also find local beers in our stylish bar, not to mention picnic benches outside with a National Park view to make your jaw drop. After our name change from YHA Llwyn-y-Celyn, YHA Brecon Beacons is more popular than ever and we're staying open 5 days a week all this winter (who would miss those Narnia-like landscapes). With snuggly double rooms available and excellent customer service, you couldn't feel more welcome.

Walking and Cycling

With everything from pony trekking to mountain biking within reach, the Brecon Beacons National Park is packed with exciting outdoor activities. YHA Brecon Beacons' guests and staff are always up to something active, whether its fundraising, walking weekends or the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge. The mighty Pen-y-Fan - the highest peak in Southern Britain - is almost in view and you can hike up its circular trail or take the cycle route from our door. The waterfalls of local village Ystradfellte were showcased in the BBC's 'Merlin', and there's a footpath from us to the Craig Crrig y Gleisiad nature reserve; a stunning area of jagged rocks and wildlife. You can even trek to YHA Danywenallt and say hello to our fellow hostel, or venture further to the stunning Black Mountains. Bring a bike or hire one nearby and take the peaceful Taff trail from Brecon to Cardiff, or pump some adrenaline on the mountain bike trails of Garwnant Forest. If you fancy something even more adventurous, we can put you in touch with local canoeing or horse riding companies too. The National Park Visitor Centre is only a couple of miles away - don't miss their wonderful stargazing evenings, making the most of our International Dark Sky Reserve status.

National Park Attractions

YHA Brecon Beacons may look the countryside ideal, but there's still plenty of exciting stuff going on around us. The bright lights of Cardiff are around an hour away, and there are many vibrant local festivals and events even nearer. Look out for top international acts at the annual Brecon Jazz festival, or head to Hay-on-Wye for their excellent Winter Food Festival. The National Park Visitor Centre is a hub of interesting happenings all year round, including art and crafts exhibitions, entertaining family tours and sparkling plans for Christmas. The world-famous Hay Festival has brought together writers, filmmakers and politicians for 27 years; join them this May to debate and share stories in an inspiring Brecon Beacons setting. Lovers of great whisky can't miss making a pilgrimage to the Penderyn Distillery, "the best little distillery in Wales" and home to fantastic tastings and tours. Or enjoy a jaw-dropping day underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, complete with life-size dinosaurs, spectacular rock formations and facts galore. Need something to tire out the kids? The Llangorse multi-activity centre has everything from zip-lines to thrilling tree-top challenges.

School Trips

With a big chunk of our guests being groups, YHA Brecon Beacons is always at home for school trips and educational visits. Our Action Adventure package runs in association with ProActive and you can choose from caving, mountaineering, abseiling and more - kids love learning new skills in the wild outdoors. We can also help arrange field courses for budding scientists at local farms and quarries, and our area has a wealth of amazing geography knowledge to share. Or if you're after a traditional self-led school trip, we can provide a friendly atmosphere for students and delicious home-cooked meals for them to re-fuel with. So what are you waiting for? Experience the warmest welcome in Wales with a stay at YHA Brecon Beacons.
