Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA London St Paul's

Steeped in history and literally seconds from the famous cathedral, YHA London St Paul's is proud to be our first London Hostel of the Week. After nearly 100 years as a school for choirboys, this remarkable-looking building boasts the ultimate location for exploring London's most fascinating tourist attractions.

Whether you're an international group or a family of fun-seekers, a stay at our most historic London hostel is anything but ordinary.

The Hostel

YHA London St Paul's heritage includes old school choirboy graffiti (in a wood-panelled classroom no less), atmospheric spiral staircases and an elaborate exterior that screams 'if it's not Baroque, don't fix it'. If you think you know our city hostels, think again - you'll find loads of charming period features here, from the Latin wall paintings outside to the ornately carved front door. The Grade 2 listed building housed St Paul's Choir School for generations and its quirky and friendly feel makes it a huge hit with school trips from around the globe. With London's history within walking distance, YHA London St Paul's has everything you need to relax after a long day exploring the city's cultural heart. Curl up with a book in our cosy lounge, enjoy a great-value meal in our stylish restaurant and thank goodness it's not still the 1800s; we have free Wi-Fi, computers to use, and a team of helpful city-savvy staff on standby. And of course, there's nothing quite like waking up to those cathedral bells...

Family Attractions

Want to see all the famous London sights in one go? YHA London St Paul's hits the jackpot with its prime tourist location and - depending on how far you fancy walking - many big attractions are in reach. The world-famous architecture of St Paul's Cathedral is 100 metres away, Tate Modern's hoard of contemporary art lies just over the Millennium Bridge, and the marvellous Museum of London is a fountain of knowledge about the capital. Walk a little further to explore terrifying family fave the London Dungeon or the Tower of London's grisly past, or spend the day filling your belly at foodie paradise Borough Market. With multi-arts centre the Barbican nearby and some top opportunities for city selfies near The Gherkin and The Shard, the area around the hostel has something for everyone. If all that culture leaves you needing some retail therapy, One New Change has the perfect mix of high-end and highstreet shops, plus some of the best free views of London from its rooftop terrace - reached by an eye-opening glass elevator.

City Life

Even though it's a self-confessed 'non-party' hostel, YHA London St Paul's has some fab nights out nearby - ask staff and they'll point you to clubber's paradise Fabric or the Pasternoster Chop House of Channel 4's 'First Dates'. Just like our hostel, historic pubs nearby such as The Cockpit and The Blackfriar are packed with personality and character. Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's old haunt Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese has a gloomy charm all of its own; pop in for an ale from Sam Smith's indie brewery. Or join a London tradition that started 800 years ago, with the epic 3-mile-long Lord Mayor's Show procession. There's often fun goings-on at Pasternoster Square (look out for trampolines and table tennis) and Shakepeare's Globe Theatre has thrilling drama and music all year round. Whether you want to schmooze at a Tate Modern opening, catch the outdoor cinema at Somerset House or hear heavenly voices in the cathedral, it's all just a walk away. You can even join us for West End Wednesdays; a fabulous trip to see a top show at a discount price.

Outdoor Activities

Just because you're in the heart of London doesn't mean you have to scrimp on exercise! With the scenic Thames Path National Trail nearby for keen hikers and ramblers, many guests set off from YHA London St Paul's for a morning jog in the shadow of the city's landmarks. You can even tackle the historic London Wall Walk and follow the well-trodden route between the Museum of London to the Tower of London. If you fancy the refreshing spray of the Thames, there are countless boat tours from the pier. For adrenaline junkies, ask at reception and join us for a high-octane adventure on the Thames Jet every Thursday - we offer a great discount and it's by far our favourite way to go sightseeing.

So what are you waiting for? Be part of YHA London St Paul's history and book a stay!
