About YHA Grinton Lodge
Situated on the southern slopes of Swaledale, YHA Grinton Lodge is surrounded by stunning scenery and exceptional views of the Yorkshire Dales.
This former hunting lodge was built in 1817 and remained in private hands until after the Second World War when it was sold to YHA and has been used as a Youth Hostel ever since. The castle-esque building is impressive in structure and design and is built around a central courtyard.
Refurbished to a high specification in 2012, the beautiful building also boasts a gorgeous honeymoon suite complete with a free standing roll top bath on the top floor – a great place to stay for couples or if you enjoy your privacy.
For walking holidays there are lots of routes throughout the Yorkshire Dales National Park for varying abilities and for anyone doing the Coast to Coast walk, YHA Grinton Lodge makes for a well-deserved stop-off point. If you’re on your mountain bike, set off from the Youth Hostel and choose a path to suit you.
For school groups, the south range of the lodge, a former stable block, is made up of classroom facilities. There are also plenty of activities to take part in on the extensive hostel grounds.
The Youth Hostel is just a 10 minute walk from the village of Grinton which has a cosy pub and a small church. If you’re exploring by car or bus, the larger historic market town of Richmond is 10 miles away. Richmond Castle is a must-visit tourist attraction and there’s a cinema, art gallery and heritage centre to keep you entertained.
For something a bit different, why not try YHA’s camping pods in the grounds of YHA Grinton Lodge. If you like camping but can’t stand the wind, rain and cold, then these heated wooden cabins are the perfect alternative. Great for family breaks, our pods, which are more glamping than camping, are suitable for up to a family of four.
To tempt you after your day of activities, tasty meals and drinks are available from the bar. You can see a sample of our menu here.
