History

The date of the cottage is unknown but the name “Tanners” most likely originates from the Tanner (or le Tannere) family who owned this land between 1340 and 1530. The word “Hatch” refers to a gate in enclosed grounds, which in the Middle Ages were known as “Commons”. Historical records show five hatches on Ranmore Common, this being the only one associated with a building. It is possible that this would have been needed for those working on the land. It was rediscovered by YHA volunteers in 1943 and rebuilt by them 1944-46.
