Training Courses

YHA offers an extensive range of training courses, many resulting in a nationally recognised qualification, covering a variety of outdoor pursuits. Courses are provided for those wishing to lead and supervise groups in outdoor activities including climbing and walking, and we also offer training in subjects such as navigation and first aid.

Mountain Leader Refresher Courses 18+

Coniston Holly How

If you’ve undertaken a Mountain Leader Training course but need that extra bit of help before you go for Assessment, this refresher weekend is for you! It is managed by the MTTUK and will cover aspects of navigation, steep ground and ropework, access, conservation, leadership and weather.
The course runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon with all tuition and meals included (except first night’s meal).

Navigation for Hillwalkers

Coniston Holly How

These two day courses look at all the skills necessary for the British hillwalker to safely navigate around our mountains. These skills include macro and micro navigation, use of a compass and skills such as pacing and timing.
Essential skills such as route finding, skills we need to avoid getting lost and should we do so how to get out of trouble. The use of a GPS will also be covered.
The cost includes accommodation and course fees plus breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meal on Saturday.

Winter Hillwalking Courses

This introduction to winter hillwalking includes tuition on the use of ice axes and crampons (hire available at extra cost), winter navigation, assessing the risk of snow conditions and safe decision making. The cost includes accommodation and course fees plus meals beginning with breakfast on the first morning.

Single Pitch Award Training 18+

For climbers leading and supervising groups. Learn to supervise sessions on single pitch crags and artificial walls. The gritstone outcrops of the Peak District make an ideal location for this training course.

Single Pitch Award Assessment 18+

Edale

You will be assessed in accordance with the MLTE criteria. Involving a written paper and practical work with a group of novice climbers. You must be registered with the MLTE and hold a valid first aid certificate. You will have attended an approved training course and then gained further experience which is recorded in your logbook. Proficient in the use of climbing equipment, you are currently able to lead severe grade rock climbs.

Summer mountain leader award training 18+

A six-day course based at YHA Coniston Holly How from Sunday morning to Friday afternoon. The course is managed by the UKMTB and designed for hill walkers wishing to lead people in the mountains. Skills covered include navigation, campcraft, ropework, access and conservation, leadership and weather.

Okehampton Discovery Breaks - Navigation Courses

Fed up being a sheep, mystified by a compass or GPS, don’t know who Naismith was, or what a handrail is, then this is the course for you. Aimed at people who wish to learn to navigate confidently it is based on the syllabus for the National Navigation Award Scheme and can be certificated to bronze or silver award.  Based in Dartmoor National Park this is the ideal location to practice these skills and have an enjoyable weekend. As in previous years we run a woman only and an adults and family course
