Springtime news from YHA Earby

<h1 title=Springtime news from YHA Earby" class="imagefield mam" />

YHA Earby is a small hostel with a big heart! If you’ve never visited this country cottage near the Yorkshire Dales, you’ll be surprised at how much goes on here. Here are some highlights from the spring edition of “Glen Cottage Diary” – a newsletter from Friends of Earby Youth Hostel.

In September, I was lucky enough to join the fantastic team at YHA Sherwood Forest as a volunteer. Another volunteer called Catherine and I went to volunteer as Group Activity Leaders leading a DofE Gold Residential. There were 14 enthusiastic DofE’ers embarking on the final leg of their DofE journey. It was great to see the group dynamics change through-out the course of the week. When the young people arrived, it’s fair to say they were all a little quiet.

Following our best year ever in 2014 and visitor numbers already set to be smashed this year, we're looking to recruit 70 new volunteer managers to run hostels in England and Wales.

The search is now on to find volunteer managers for 25 Youth Hostels. As well as being an opportunity to get involved with us, it’s also an opportunity for people aged over 18 to enhance their CV or brush up on existing management skills.

Perfecting Portland - Volunteer Event Photos

Earlier this year YHA Portland held a fantastic volunteering event called Perfecting Portland. Our lovely volunteers came from all over the country to improve our hostel internally and externally - here are the photos to prove it! A big thanks to everyone who got involved, and for Greg's photography skills for capturing this great event.

Volunteering at YHA Wye Valley - Louise's Diary

YHA runs DofE Gold volunteer Residentials throughout the year at hostels across England and Wales. Our DofE volunteers make a huge difference to YHA through a range of activities: we've had outdoor pizza oven making in the Peak District, gardening in Northumberland and painting in Dorset! These volunteers make our hostels as welcoming as possible for the families, school children and individuals that stay with us.

On the 27th to 29th March, YHA Woody's Top in Lincolnshire will be the venue for the 2015 GB1BST Special Event Station, celebrating the start of British Summer Time!

Next year YHA is launching a new initiative to inspire more people to support YHA in their local area and we are looking for at least two people to take on a new volunteer role of Support Group Coordinator.

YHA Councils meet in Birmingham

More than 80 people attended a joint meeting of all YHA’s councils on Saturday 18th February in Birmingham.

YHA has held similar joint meetings in the last two years and Saturday’s was the best attended of these.

During the meeting members of the councils discussed opportunities for changing the composition of the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is the cornerstone meeting for YHA’s governance.

Young people take over

30 students from a local school took over YHA for the day on Friday 11th November. The students from Highfields School in Matlock were taking part in National Take over day when YHA joined with hundreds of organisations across the country to involve 50,000 children in decision-making.

This was a great opportunity to involve young people in decisions about the services YHA provides.
