YHA Summer School hailed a success by Cathedral Academy

Wakefield’s Cathedral Academy has attributed the success of its pilot summer school to a three way partnership between itself, YHA (the Youth Hostels Association) and i2i, a specialist in leading and delivering positive change in education.

Kat Cafferky, Vice Principal of Cathedral Academy said: “By combining the expertise of external training providers YHA and i2i alongside the care and support provided by Cathedral Academy staff we were able to offer students a unique opportunity to develop into resilient and resourceful learners.’

Cathedral Academy took 30 children, due to start Year 6 in September, from six feeder primary schools to YHA Castleton Losehill Hall, in the Peak District, Derbyshire, for a residential summer school. The four-day, three night programme combined classroom based and practical outdoor activities delivered by YHA and i2i, which culminated in a celebration event recognising students’ individual and group achievements.

The outdoor space at YHA Castleton was praised by Mrs Cafferky, who said: “The safe, open layout of both the accommodation and the grounds at YHA Castleton played an important part in the success of the summer school. ’All activities, a mix of classroom and practical outdoor exercises, were designed to help the children build self-belief and confidence. Outdoor activities, delivered by YHA, included bushcraft, shelter building, archery and orienteering in the 27 acre grounds of the Youth Hostel.

Libby Bridge, Head of Education at i2i said “we are absolutely delighted to working in partnership with the Youth Hostel Association to deliver high quality, inspirational summer programmes. The i2i programme makes such a difference to pupils’ attitudes and self-belief and for students to put our theory to the test instantly is a real bonus for all parties. We have had to the pleasure of working with Cathedral Academy staff and Year 11 students earlier in the year so it has been an honour to also work with their newest recruits. We look forward to developing our working relationship with YHA”.

Mrs Cafferky added: “The summer school at YHA Castleton has had a positive impact on all students. Their confidence grew by the day; they made many new friends and were glowing by the end of the week. We are confident that this experience will help them get off to a flying start when they arrive at Cathedral Academy in September.

“Seeing the summer school in action was fantastic. Pupil Premium funding has enabled us to provide this intervention for a specific group of students but we hope to offer this opportunity to more Cathedral Academy students in the future.

YHA (England & Wales) is a leading provider of residential activity provider to schools and colleges. It offers low cost residential and training facilities at more than 100 Youth Hostels throughout England and Wales.
