Volunteering at YHA Wye Valley - Louise's Diary

YHA runs DofE Gold volunteer Residentials throughout the year at hostels across England and Wales. Our DofE volunteers make a huge difference to YHA through a range of activities: we've had outdoor pizza oven making in the Peak District, gardening in Northumberland and painting in Dorset! These volunteers make our hostels as welcoming as possible for the families, school children and individuals that stay with us.

Louise, a YHA Group Activity Leader, has been keeping a diary about her time at the YHA Wye Valley DofE Residential! Leaders play a huge part in making our Residentials and volunteer events successful by taking care of the volunteers and giving assistance to our youth hostel staff.

A big thank you to Louise for making this week so enjoyable and memorable for the volunteers! If you’re interested in becoming a Group Activity Leader, please email [email protected]

YHA Wye Valley DofE Residential

30th March – 3rd April

Day 1

Good evening Volunteering Team from YHA Wye Valley Duke of Edinburgh Residential Day 1! It's been a chilled out start to the week with some ice breakers (featuring a personality test pig), some brainstorming of ideas - including representing the River in the style of the London Underground and even featuring Harry Potter (and Voldemort) trading their Forest of Dean camping for a cosy hostel stay! We even managed some outdoor challenges this evening to build our teamwork. All volunteers are now resting their creative minds ready for the design phase tomorrow.

Day 2

It's the end of Day 2 here at Wye Valley and we have been super busy! We've prepped the boards with a base layer or two, taken an inspirational walk through the Wye Valley (and made use of a selfie stick for an awesome group shot). After a picnic lunch we've finalised our designs and presented them to the hostel team and with their approval we can go ahead and get painting tomorrow! We even finished the night off with a quiz (congrats to team Metafix!) and now we are all super exhausted. Early nights all round and more photos to come tomorrow! Goodnight all.

Day 3

Our Duke of Edinburgh project is coming along fabulously! Today we started painting the boards that will make up our mural. 4 very different views of the River Wye and its surroundings but all a hit with the hostels staff team. We've had a hectic day but managed to chill out this evening with marshmallows and hot chocolate around the campfire (even brought out the inner Scout/Guide from some of our volunteers with a few songs!) Everyone's now pleasantly full of sugar and smells pretty burnt. Last full day of the project tomorrow so exciting updates to come. Keep an eye out for our finished mural - maybe you'll love it so much you'll come visit the beautiful Wye Valley! We hope so.

Day 4

It's our last full day! Already emotional...still some final touches on the paintings to do tomorrow but you'll have to wait till tomorrow afternoon for our finished masterpieces I'm afraid! Today was epic. Lots of painting - lots of ideas on our final board (all about the project) and we even managed to spot some deer grazing outside the hostel by the trees, when we went outside for a breath of fresh air between our hard work. We also had an extra bit of Easter fun to our day - we joined the YHA with some fab egg decoration and ended the day with some team challenges to gain points to protect our beautiful eggs, before they were sent for an egg dropping spectacular...sadly only two survived! RIP Volderharry, Dave the Minion and Little Green Ninja man - who gave their lives to art (and volunteering of course).

Day 5

Here it is!!! The finished piece - not quite in order as everyone is holding their own piece plus extra team boards! They've all worked incredibly hard and signed off their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential. Thanks YHA Volunteering and YHA Wye Valley for all your help. It's been a fantastic experience!

Team DofE Wye Valley - you guys were fab! Best of luck with the completion of your award and hope to see you volunteering with YHA again soon!
