Tamar Valley revitalised after £7m investment

After ten years and £7 million of investment, a picturesque section of the Tamar Valley has finally been opened up to the public. The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was once the hub of Cornwall's mining industry, but the closure of the pits has led to a lengthy regeneration project to make it a haven for trail-walkers, cyclists and others looking to explore the countryside, the Plymouth Herald reports.

A new visitors' centre, the Tamar Trails Centre, forms the central focus of the regeneration, and is home to learning resources about the surrounding area, webcams broadcasting the local wildlife in their natural environment, a café and meeting rooms. From here, visitors can head off and explore 25 kilometres of walking, cycling and horse-riding trails, some of which follow old mineral tramways and railway lines that serviced what is now the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

The project has been completed with funding from the National Lottery with Simon Timms, chairman of the Heritage Lottery South West Fund, saying the area was often overlooked and few had appreciated that it was a "hidden gem" waiting for a new lease of life.

Centre manager Corinna Woodall told the newspaper: "The new centre is a brilliant addition to the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - as a meeting place, as a place for learning and a place to explore the great outdoors.

"It is also the culmination of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project, which has helped to conserve and consolidate many historic mine sites, enhanced key wildlife habitats and created the opportunity for everyone to have access to these special places through the Tamar Trails network."

If you want to take in the natural beauty of the area and explore the new trails of the Tamar Valley, why not look into booking a stay at one of great-value hostels in the South West to make a real break of it?
