North Pennines planning big events for 2013

A summer of celebration is planned in the North Pennines this year as the region celebrates 25 years since it was given Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status.

Key to the celebration will be the reopening of the The Bowlees Visitor Centre near Newbiggin after a two-year, £150,000 revamp, the Teesdale Mecury reports. As well as updating the interior, a café selling locally sourced food and a shop selling items unique to the area will also form part of the centre. There will also be extensive displays containing information on the history of the North Pennines and advice on places to visit.

Along with the new visitor centre, ten areas of the North Pennines will be designated Dark Skies Discovery Sites, where visitors will be best placed to see the night sky in all its glory. Other events include a beginners' workshop on dry-stone walling, birdwatching tours and fell runs. Celebrating the geology of the landscape, a series of other events will explore the rocks and fossils of an area which ten years ago became Europe's first Geopark.

The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership director, Chris Woodley-Stewart, told the newspaper: "The North Pennines is such a stunning part of the British countryside and with these events we hope people will get a chance to see why it has been recognised as having such national importance."

The summer of events will culminate in the North Pennines Walking Festival, which runs from September 28th to October 6th and features 15 separate walks to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Alfred Wainwright's 247-mile 'Pennine Journey'. The guided walks vary in length and difficulty, so people of all abilities are welcome.

If you feel like joining in with the celebrations this summer, then why not book a stay at one of our great-value local hostels to really make a break of it?
