Ready to explore? Take a look at our top five things to do in Manchester which cover culture, food, leisure, sport and history.

Explore Manchester’s rich history through its museums and architecture. You can walk amongst Roman fortifications and industrial cotton mills. Enjoy a great medley of fancy restaurants and bars as you shop ‘till you drop, or partake in the cultural, music and sporting scenes. Manchester’s multitude of activities makes for a great city break for everyone.

The Northern Quarter

Take a trip to The Northern Quarter. In the 1990s, the Northern Quarter was regenerated as the centre of the independent music, shopping, café and restaurant culture. It is an extremely vibrant area of the city located just off the main commercial shopping streets. Delight your taste buds in the variety of delicious eateries or enjoy a cocktail or two in one of the many thriving bars. Amongst a number of designer and retro shops there is also a great little craft and design centre off Thomas Street.

Ancoats – The World’s First Industrial Suburb

Take a step back in time as you explore north east Manchester. Ancoats is situated next to the Northern Quarter and is a rapidly regenerating area. The gentrification of the area aims to bring the historical buildings to light rather than overshadow them. Modern cultural activities such as music/ comedy venues such as The Frog and Bucket or Band on the Wall are found amongst 18th Century industrial buildings. Take a wander down the cobbled streets and experience a blast from the past. This should definitely be on your ‘things to do in Manchester’ list- you will not be disappointed!

Castlefield Urban Heritage Park

Located a short stroll away from Deansgate Station, a mile and a half walk from Piccadilly Gardens or a short tram ride away, Castlefield Urban Heritage Park provides further opportunity for historical exploration as well as a relaxing walk along a scenic canal. Highlights include a Roman Fort dating back to 79 BC and a number of quirky pubs and restaurants. If a refreshing beer is your beverage, Cask bar is well worth a visit. They stock a comprehensive list of beers from around the globe.

The Lowry

Another great thing to do in Manchester is exploring the Lowry. A long time ago, some very clever people decided that the area where Salford and Trafford meet would make a great leisure destination. So now we have a great waterside location just 10 minutes from the city centre, where The Lowry, Imperial War Museum North and Old Trafford are all within walking distance of each other. The Lowry is a hot spot for top theatre, from world premieres to West End successes. Once the show’s over, there’s also quirky shops, a cinema, tasty restaurants and plenty of places to relax, so history lovers, sports fans and shopaholics all get a look-in.

National Cycling Centre

If you’re after some more vigorous activities then the National Cycling Centre not only hosts cycling events but also gives you the opportunity to take to the track. There is a range of sessions available depending upon your experience. A taster session begins at £12 for an adult and advanced classes go up to £18. Up for something more extreme? The facility also offers the opportunity to have a go at BMX track riding from £7 for adults.
