Educate and entertain this half term

The February half term can be a difficult time for parents - the weather is not warm enough to simply let the kids play outside all day, but you still want to get them out and about doing things, rather than lounging around the house all day. Luckily, there are plenty of great events going on around the country which will both entertain and educate.

Kids with an interest in science will be in their element at the Brighton Science Festival, with child-friendly workshops that include some super sleuthing, and the chance to explore the ancient world of dinosaurs at Booth Museum.

Over at Ironbridge in Shropshire, meanwhile, Enginuity will be using half-term to focus on flight, letting children learn about rockets - and even how to build their own.

Up in the city of York, history takes to the streets in the next two weeks with the always-popular Viking Festival, where upwards of 40,000 people are expected to come out to enjoy battle re-enactments, craft workshops, guided walks and even the sight of longships out on the river.

Meanwhile, the creative juices will be flowing down in Exeter, where Extreme Imagination - taking place at various venues across the city - will be bringing stories to life in a bid to inspire the next generation of JK Rowlings.

Wherever you choose to take the kids this half-term, YHA's range of hostels will allow you to make that day trip into a short break - without breaking the bank.
