Dyffryn House's restoration revealed

This Easter weekend wasn't all about eating too much chocolate - it also marked an exciting fresh start for one particular Edwardian mansion.

Dyffryn House, set in the Vale of Glamorgan in Cardiff, opened its doors to members of the public for the first time since its multimillion-pound restoration. The National Trust took over the impressive house in January 2013, and since then has given new life to five of the 52 rooms.

The property, which was home to mining tycoon John Cory in the 19th century, boasts wooden vaulted ceilings and an impressive stained-glass window as well as gardens spanning 55 acres. These gardens were the brainchild of Mr Cory himself, while architect Thomas Mawson made them a reality.

Visitors to Dyffryn House were given the opportunity to explore the Red Drawing Room (in which silk panels have been beautifully restored or replaced) the Great Hall and the master bedroom - known as the Plant Hunters Room - which overlooks the canal and sprawling lawn.

The billiard room was another awe-inspiring sight for visitors thanks to the dramatic fireplace and the intricately carved wooden wall panels.

Local volunteers were available to provide a wealth of information to visitors, to ensure they really got the most from their weekend visit. The National Trust has high hopes of the re-opening being a success throughout the rest of 2013, too, and is expecting more than 60,000 visitors this year.

If you like the idea of taking a step back in time to explore Dyffryn House and the stunning surrounding areas, and really get a feel for the work the National Trust has put into re-establishing the house as a great place to spend an afternoon, why not check into our great-value hostel to make a trip of it?
