Day 4: YHA Cheddar to YHA Leominster

We demolished our breakfast in preparation for the biggest day in the saddle yet. It was a slow but steady start to the morning. A grey carpet of cloud, which resembled the flooring of an a 90s office block, pealed open, curled at the sides and dumped a fuzzy type of rain on us. It was bleak but our spirits we're high on flapjacks, mixed nuts, Murray Mints, coffee, full English breakfast, cereal, bananas, oranges, apples, chocolate, yogurt - all before 12pm.

Day 4 Route: YHA Cheddar, Somerset to YHA Leominster
Mileage: 88 Miles
Song of the Day: Perfect Day - Lou Reed
Phrase of the Day: My knee hurts

Our first leg skirted around the Mendips and dropped us into the eye-watering and lung-bashing armpit of Avonmouth industrial area. This huge expanse of biscuit manufacturers, parcel depots, power stations and drifts of rubbish was a hive of productivity but an extreme opposite to the landscapes we'd experienced so far. The windy Seven Bridge came next and certainly freshened us up for our entrance to Wales. We then stumbled across some brilliant street art illustrating Chepstow.

Our dreamy cycle through the Wye Valley was bought to a dramatic halt when we found Tom upside down in a bush. His ability to drink and swallow painkillers whilst riding still needs refining. The front wheel clipped the road edge and resulted in a full flip of the bike with Tom attached. No major damage and the aforementioned painkillers began to work shortly after.

It really was a case of heads down and cycle. People had told us that it wouldn't all be toffee, jam and postcard views. They were right.

We each found our zone that carried us through the rain and into a moody twilight that brought swarms of bugs for us to swallow. Hereford greeted us with a mammoth descent into the city and the pace didn't alter as we pushed onto Leominster. Exhausted, exhilarated and very happy, we arrived at the Youth Hostel in the dark.

The longest, hardest, but undeniably best day was under our belt. Bring on plenty more like this please.

A perfect day.
