Situated at 470m on the northern slopes of Skiddaw, YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse is one of the highest and most remote hostels in the UK. This unique location offers uninterrupted mountain views, without roads or other buildings in sight.

Where you'll sleep

Across the entire building there is a total of 4 bedrooms.

First floor

One room that sleeps up to 2 people. It includes 2 single beds.

Two rooms that sleep up to 5 people each. They include 2 sets of bunk beds and a single bed.

One room that sleeps up to 8 people. It includes 4 sets of bunk beds.

A cot is available.


Shared spaces

Kitchen and dining

The small scullery kitchen is located on the ground floor and includes a range of conveniences listed below.

Kitchen appliances: grill, kettle, oven.

Kitchenware: dishes and cutlery for 20 people, kitchen utensils, pots, pans.

Cleaning basics: anti-bacterial spray, bin bags, cloths, paper towels, soap sponges, washing up liquid.

Located on the ground floor, the dining room seats up to 16 people. Soft seating is also provided around the stove.

A highchairs is available.

Lounge

The lounge is located on the ground floor. Cosy up by the stove with a range of board games to relax with after a long day on the mountains.

Bathrooms

Across the entire building there is a total of two bathrooms.

Toilet paper is provided and hand soap is available next to all sinks.

Outdoors

Guests have full access to the garden and grounds. The garden is enclosed by a fence and has a gate.

Stay here for a real escape from it all; with no mains electricity, phone signal, TV or internet to distract from the wilderness. Solar panels provide light and hot water, while wood-burning stoves provide the only heating in this Alpine-hut style bunkhouse.

Hostel need to know

Reception open hours: From 17:00 - 21:30. If you arrive before check-in, you can access the common room via a keypad code - this will be emailed to you before arrival.

Self-catering: YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse is self-catering only. Guests have access to a kitchen.

Parking: The hostel is 3 miles from the nearest road and only accessible on foot or by mountain bike. Free parking is available in Threkeld, Keswick, Mosedale and Bassenthwaite.

Dogs: Pets are not permitted at YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse. Assistance dogs are welcome – please notify us at the time of booking.

Card payments: Due to being off-grid we are unable take card payments at the hostel, so please bring cash or cheques.

History

Built as a shooting lodge in the early 19th century, Skiddaw House was also used as a shepherd’s and gamekeeper’s accommodation until the 1970s. It became a youth hostel in 1987.
