History

Steeped in history, Berwick has ramparts to explore and also offers some breathtaking views from its Elizabethan town walls. YHA Berwick itself is housed in a 240-year-old restored granary.

Meet the team

The team here bring a whole set of skills to the hostel – from cheese making to archaeology, historian to writer, thespian to an explorer – and we all provide a wealth of enthusiasm and local knowledge to guests and visitors

Manager recommends: Northumberland is a hidden gem – there’s beaches and castles, history, and culture. The Old Town is surrounded by the largest medieval walls built during the reign of Elizabeth I, and has castle ruins and a Garrison building built to help defend England from the Scots. Slightly further afield there’s Lindisfarne and St. Abbs (Little Asgard), the Farne Islands and Edinburgh. Wildlife is abundant there, with seals and others and dolphins often spotted in the river and sea.
