Practical Ranger Days

Experience being part of the Ranger Team at Northumberland National Park

Take an active role in caring for and managing Northumberland National Park, its sites, woodlands and nature reserves.

This opportunity will help young people understand, value and contribute to conserving, enhancing and enjoying the National Park’s distinctive natural and cultural qualities.

About this opportunity

This day visit includes an introduction to habitat management with experts in their fields leading the sessions.

There will be an opportunity to try a variety of techniques and practical conservation management tasks. Participants will also benefit from information and background details as to why certain tasks are carried out at certain times of year and the impact and results of the tasks.

How it works

Activities vary but may include:

  • removal of invasive species to allow native plants and animals to thrive
  • surveying skills which have been learnt will be used for Northumberland National Park records to help monitor sites for future management plans and stewardship schemes
  • illustrate how this work relates to all wild areas, big or small
  • haymeadow management
  • bracken management
  • scrubland management
  • woodland management

Participants will benefit from:

  • potential to complete the John Muir Award

What to bring

Participants will need to bring suitable outdoor clothing and waterproofs. If visiting for a full day, a packed lunch will also be required.
