Travel and adventure shapes young lives

- 2.17 million families in the UK are unable to afford a one week break at any time of year
- 1.46m families struggle to fund just one day out together
- 330k disabled children have never accessed activities outside of their home
- 112 children are newly bereaved every day in the UK

This year 256,637 young people stayed with us and 95,446 families brought their children with them on a recreational break to our countryside, coast, towns and cities.

We believe recreation strengthens relationships and creates opportunities for social interaction and these life experiences contribute to young people’s growth and personal development.

We also believe in accessible tourism and our open to all mantra underlines our commitment to making travel opportunities available to everyone regardless of physical, mental or financial challenges.

We have 160 Youth Hostels offering accommodation for families, solo travellers, clubs, societies, schools and youth groups. Our smallest hostel has just 16 beds and the largest has 320 beds. In 2017 we are opening a brand new hostel in Northumberland National Park, YHA The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall and in 2019 an 800-bed purpose built hostel, YHA London Stratford, opens giving affordable accommodation for everyone using the sports facilities at the Olympic Park.

52 Youth Hostels have made adaptations for disabled guests with a combined total of 89 accessible bedrooms. Our social spaces also set us apart and create the opportunity for everyone to mix, share stories and make friends. This is one way that YHA contributes to community cohesion, tolerance and understanding.

Keeping our prices affordable is also important to us and this year our guests scored us 93% on value for money.

Recreation key outcomes

73% of guests surveyed said YHA offers good value accommodation.

78% of young people met lots of new people and made new friends during their stay with YHA.

78% of young volunteers said they chose to volunteer with YHA because it gave them the opportunity to travel.

Did you know?

800,000 children and young people are living with a disability and 330,000 have never accessed activities outside the home.

£150 could enable a family to take their disabled child on a memorable break away from home.
