Newcastle upon Tyne is situated in the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, situated on the north bank of the River Tyne. The city itself is known for its fashionable shopping and social districts, but it's also packed with historical landmarks and family-friendly attractions.

The surrounding landscape also promises plenty of days out for all ages, with the unspoilt beauty of the North truly visible in the rural landscape. From the sweeping Pennine hills to the Northumberland coastline, there's plenty to see and explore, ideal for a UK holiday outdoors.

Newcastle upon Tyne can be reached from two of our YHA hostels: choose from the peaceful Edmundbyers, situated in a 17th century inn in the heart of an Area of Natural Beauty, or the more central Durham hostel, which opens in college holidays and lies just next to the stunning Durham Cathedral.

 

Five Free Things To Do In Newcastle Upon Tyne

Walking tour of Newcastle
Simply walking through the town will reveal a number of significant landmarks - the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is an impressive sight, as are the remains of the city's Castle Keep. Grey's Monument is also a good stop for people-watching and street entertainment.

Great North Museum
Situated close to Newcastle University's campus, the Great North Museum is an absolute must for families - complete with fossils, mummies and stuffed animals, it's the perfect balance between gruesome and entertaining for kids of all ages. Here you'll also find local history and plenty of activities.

The Angel of the North
The famous steel sculpture lying on the southern edge of the Low Fell suburb is a must-see while on holiday in Newcastle upon Tyne. There are some lovely walks around the area, and the landmark itself is so iconic that it's impossible not to want a picture with it!

Edmundbyers Lead Mining Trail
This walk across the Northern Dales is close to YHA Edmundbyers and makes for a perfect family walk, with views over the Pennines and a number of ruins including mining and smelting structures to explore.

Cycling
There's a vast network of cycle paths across the Tyne and Wear countryside. Head to the seafront to join the Coast to Coast cycling route, or take a look at local cycling initiatives - there are lots to choose from - for a group outing around the area.
