Places to stay in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes is unusual in that it was only created in the 1960s, specifically to fulfil housing shortages in London and the surrounding area. But far from being just a series of housing estates, Milton Keynes has developed into a fascinating town in its own right.

While it may not be able to boast the history of many others in the UK, being a modern creation has allowed Milton Keynes to utilise its space exactly as it chooses, and it does so very effectively. The town boasts a huge outdoor arena, an indoor skiing, snowboarding and climbing centre, theme parks, adventure playgrounds, wide-open spaces for relaxing in, even a safari park - not being constrained by old buildings and narrow streets works in the town's favour.

With all these activities on offer, there is plenty going on to keep kids entertained on a family break, while great nightlife and dining options make it perfect for adults, too.

While the town of Milton Keynes itself is relatively new, the local YHA hostel is set just outside the town in an 18th century farmhouse - making it great-value rural accommodation perfectly situated for access to all Milton Keynes has to offer and the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Five Free Things To Do In Milton Keynes

See the concrete cows
The concrete cows are one of Milton Keynes's most famous landmarks, and unlike many older statues in other cities, you can climb all over these ones.

Be a Roman
The old Roman villa at nearby Bancroft is free to walk around, allowing you to stride around like a gladiator or simply lie back in your best Emperor pose.

Willen Lake
Willen Lake has plenty going on; you can go for a relaxing walk, a bike ride, watch the water skiers splash around or look out for wild birds - or you could take the kids to a huge outdoor play area.

Explore the Maze
Near Willen Park is a hedgerow maze which is great fun for kids and adults alike as you try to find your way in - then out. Just don't attempt it if you're in a rush!

Art Trail
Milton Keynes is big on big street art, and you can see some stunning and intriguing sights if you take a stroll through the picturesque Campbell Park.
