British adventurer Sarah Outen MBE appointed as YHA Ambassador

In celebration of Women’s Sport Week 2017 (19 – 25 June), YHA (England and Wales) has announced the appointment of British athlete and adventurer, Sarah Outen MBE as an ambassador of the youth hostelling charity.

Sarah was the first woman and the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean and also the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Alaska. She also completed a round the world journey under her own power, by rowing, cycling and kayaking, in a journey called ‘London to London via the World, in November 2015.

She joins fellow YHA ambassadors Sir Chris Bonington, Alan Hinkes and Alex Staniforth, who are committed to supporting YHA in making a significant difference in the lives of young people. Sarah and her fellow ambassadors are each playing an important role in helping YHA reach one million young people each year.

Commenting on her appointment, Sarah said: “I am really proud to be a YHA Ambassador. It’s a really important organisation doing great things, encouraging people to get out and explore. I especially admire and support the work YHA does with young people.”

As a YHA Ambassador Sarah will help showcase YHA to a wider audience and assist the charity in raising awareness of the important impact it makes on society.

She added: “My aim as a YHA Ambassador is to encourage people to get outside and spend time away from screens. I want people to go and explore and do it at a level that feels comfortable to them.”

Sarah is no stranger to Youth Hostels, having stayed in them since childhood with friends and family and since though her work. She added: “My favourite Youth Hostel is YHA Edale. To date I have stayed there four times and I have very different memories from each of my experiences; some work and some play, and that’s very special for me.”

Welcoming Sarah to YHA, William Howarth, Acting Chief Executive of the charity, said: “We are delighted and honoured to have Sarah on board. She is truly inspirational and an ideal role model for young people and women. Having stayed with YHA as a child and into adulthood, Sarah is the embodiment of the positive benefits that come from staying with us.”

In one of her roles as YHA Ambassador, Sarah will be delivering the keynote speech at YHA’s AGM later this year and also meeting the many people who volunteer each summer to assist with YHA’s Summer Camps programme for young people aged 10 – 19 years old.
