Your help wins Boggle £25,000

The 2014 Hostelling International Sustainability Fund First Prize of £25,000 will be used to support the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof of The Crow’s Nest at YHA Boggle Hole.

Thank you for your vote and encouraging others to vote for YHA Boggle Hole too, we did it again for the second year in a row! In case you can't remeber, last year was the biomass boiler installed at YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass. We received the most votes thanks to our YHA members and guests.

We were left hundreds of comments containing fantastic feedback about the hostel, so here is our selection of the best:

“Boggle Hole is a wonderful hostel. Good for long distance walking (Cleveland Way). Good for school parties etc. Environmentally sustainable power would make it even more attractive!”

“Supporting YHA and the opportunities it provides especially for younger children is invaluable - to combine this with the future sustainability of these opportunities is immeasurable.”

“Boggle Hole is an amazing hostel. I've stayed here a couple of times now and both times have been lovely. This place really deserves to win!!”

“Boggle hole is a truly FANTASTIC place, a haven of peace in a busy world. It really deserves to be invested in so that many families can benefit from its unique position.”

“Stayed many years ago with my daughter and her friend both aged 15 yrs while on cycling holiday in N. Yorks. We all loved Boggle Hole, hence it has a vote from me.”

“BOGGLE HOLE IS UNIQUE AND PRICELESS.”

We didn’t stumble over the line, we won by some distance, testimony to the great experiences people have had at YHA Boggle Hole, plus the great loyalty and support we receive from our members and guests.

Development work will start at YHA Boggle Hole next week and we will see the hostel re-open in late spring. When constructed, the new annexe roof will incorporate an 11 kW peak array of 40 x 275 watt solar photovoltaic panels generating electricity.

This great addition will support both YHA’s financial and environmental sustainability as:

- YHA Boggle Hole is currently the second highest user of liquid propane gas (LPG) in the entire YHA network with £14,250 spent per annum on this fossil fuel
- The hostel is currently in the top 30 users of energy in the YHA network consuming 351,000 kWh per annum (23.46 kWh per overnight)
- Total CO2 savings of 4.1 tonnes annually will be achieved
- The volume of CO2 saved is equivalent to the emissions from an average new car driving between Land's End and John O'Groats 23 times (the driving distance between Land's End to John O'Groats is 1,347 km)
- Once operational the array will reduce CO2 emissions from the new annex building by 56%
- YHA will receive payments for the electricity produced through the government’s Feed in Tariff (FITS)

With your help we’re ensuring a sustainable future for YHA.
