YHA urges more life changing chances for young people

School visits are a fantastic introduction to exploring nature for young people and every child should have the chance to take part in a residential school visit.

This is one of the most important conclusions of YHA’s response to a consultation that the National Trust is carrying out.

The consultation aims to kick-start a nationwide movement to reconnect our children with nature and to find out what measures the people of Britain think need to be put in place to begin to ensure that every child has the chance to develop a personal connection with the natural world.

YHA’s full response went to the National Trust at the end of May and some of YHA’s key messages were;

- School visits are a fantastic introduction to exploring nature
- Every child should have the opportunity to have a residential experience
- You don’t have to spend lots of money on outdoor activities – so much that young people can do is free
- YHA’s innovative curriculum packages and social programmes are helping thousands of young people to access nature each year
- YHA is working closely with decision makers and partnership organisations to enhance the lives of young people.

Caroline White, YHA Chief Executive said, “As well as trips out with their families and friends, every child deserves to be able to take part in a school trip. These formative events can be life changing for young people, a chance to explore, understand and connect with the wider world, to mix with and understand other people and to have fun.

“YHA fully supports the efforts of the National Trust and others to give every child the chance to develop a personal connection with the natural world.”
