YHA Renewable: Energy saving throughout the network

YHA Renewable: Energy saving throughout the network

The YHA network totals 140 properties of varying ages, many of which are old, consisting of 11th century castles, a 13th century friary, and an Elizabethan country house to name a few.

At the other end of the spectrum we have purpose-built hostels, at National Forest, Lee Valley in London and the Eden Project in Cornwall. The variety of properties all adds to the experience of staying with YHA, this make it a challenge to have a generic sustainability blueprint across the network, hence the Green Spirit Plan which reflects our drive to do what we can, in terms of making our properties eco-friendly, in line with the buildings challenges.

In the last 3 years, we have invested £250,000 on renewables energy at:

£35,000 of LED, light-emitting diodes installed at:

YHA now has a totally green supply of electricity with Scottish Power.

Our natural gas usage has reduced by 22% in the last 2 years in KWH and CO2:

  • 2014 = 10,686,437 KWH / CO2 1,859.71 tonnes
  • 2013 = 13,666,153 KWH / CO2 2,388.60 tonnes
