YHA to invest £500,000 for renewables

On 30th June YHA’s Board of Trustees approved up to £500,000 of renewable energy installations within the YHA network over the coming year.

Solar panels were installed last month at YHA’s National Office in Derbsyhire last month and plans for the coming year include….

“We are really keen to reduce the impact we have on the environment at each Youth Hostel and changing to renewable energy is a key part of this plan,” says Jake Chalmers, YHA’s Director of Property.

The plan will also contribute to YHA’s drive to achieve cost savings.

Jake Chalmers added:

“In the first few years the net financial savings to YHA will be modest as we seek to repay the capital invested from the energy costs we have saved and the Feed in Tariffs we receive from the government.

“However over the lifespan of the project we expect to achieve a very healthy return with all installations having a payback within 3 - 10 years and over the next 25 years we expect the total financial return for YHA to be £2,000,000.”

YHA’s sustainability plan for Youth Hostels called Green Spirit was launched last year aiming to save energy, reduce waste and work to standards that are kind to the environment.
