YHA Councils meet in Birmingham

More than 80 people attended a joint meeting of all YHA’s councils on Saturday 18th February in Birmingham.

YHA has held similar joint meetings in the last two years and Saturday’s was the best attended of these.

During the meeting members of the councils discussed opportunities for changing the composition of the Annual General Meeting. The AGM is the cornerstone meeting for YHA’s governance.

“The risk that not enough delegates will be available to attend the AGM in future was one of the risks that spurred the meeting,” said Chairman Chris Darmon. “We need to reach out to the membership of YHA, and unlock their potential so that they can be a part of the governance of YHA.”

The meeting was told that at one time 600 people would have attended a meeting of a Regional Council whereas today less than 20 people attend some of these meetings.

Lindsay Fairbrother, one of YHA’s trustees, gave the meeting information on the changing nature of YHA’s membership. The number of members aged 21 – 30 has increased though 63% of YHA’s members are aged 40 – 65.

Many delegates at the meeting recognised that the time was right for a change and were in favour of making YHA’s AGM more open to more members.  The Board of Trustees will now seek legal advice on any changes and hold further discussions with the various councils ahead of the next AGM in Manchester on 14th July.

Three regional councils in England and a council in Wales are responsible for electing delegates to attend the AGM each year.  Along with others such as the Vice-Presidents of YHA and delegates from other organisations such as affiliated groups, the National Union of Teachers, Ramblers and Guides, delegates from the regions become the company members at the AGM.  They are responsible for electing trustees and officers.
