YHA Brighton officially opened by MP Penny Mordaunt

Coastal Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt officially opened YHA Brighton on Old Steine Road, on Monday 19 January. We have invested more than £1.2 million transforming the former 4-star Royal York Hotel into a luxury 180 bed Youth Hostel!

Our opening of YHA Brighton has not only provided much-need affordable accommodation for tourists and visitors to Brighton, but also secured the future of an historic Grade II listed building and also created 31 new jobs in the local economy.

Funding for our new flagship Youth Hostel in Brighton came from a number of sources, including YHA members and a £235,000 grant from the Government’s multi-million pound Coastal Communities Fund in an announcement in August last year.

Brighton was one of only 10 coastal towns in and around England that received a share of more than £8.5 million designed to create tourist attractions, regenerate historic sites and provide new flood defences.

Coastal Communities Minister Penny Mordaunt said: “The YHA have done an incredible job of getting this beautiful youth hostel open for business quickly, whilst retaining its regency heritage. I’m sure it will be a great success. Projects such as these would not have been possible without the support of the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund which is giving buildings up and down the coast the chance to return to former glory.”

YHA Brighton is the first property in our 140-strong network of Youth Hostels to boast en suites in all 51 of its bedrooms and free Wi-Fi for all guests! As well as our well-loved YHA bunk beds, our Youth Hostel also offers double rooms and premium rooms which include king sized beds and luxury en suites with roll top baths and a sea view. We also have a licensed bar and restaurant on site, which are open to non-residents.

Caroline White, our Chief Executive explained: “Retaining the hotel’s premium rooms will enable us to maximise occupancy and revenue, allowing us to increase the valuable work YHA does to reach out to young people and provide them with new experiences. YHA Brighton is in a prime location and it is part of our commitment to making sure that we continue to have world class hostels that are modern, comfortable, welcoming and well-located but, most importantly, accessible to everyone. We expect thousands of young people to experience this Youth Hostel and the City of Brighton every year, helping us make a significant contribution to securing Brighton's place on the international tourist map.”

We're confident that our prime location, coupled with our reputation for affordable accommodation has already made the Youth Hostel hugely popular with both domestic and overseas visitors!

Brighton attracts more than 400,000 overseas visitors each year and is the top seaside resort in the UK for overnight stays. In 2015 Brighton will also host the 2015 Rugby World Cup as well as popular annual Brighton Pride which attract tens of thousands of visitors every August.

Prices for private en suite rooms at YHA Brighton start from only £40.00 and just £14.50 for beds.

The investment in YHA Brighton brings our investment in the South East to nearly £6 million. In 2013 we also opened the popular YHA South Downs in nearby Southease.

Since 2011 we have invested more than £25million in our network of properties, creating comfortable, contemporary-styled accommodation, helping put further distance between the outdated public perception of youth hostels and the modern reality, which is proving particularly popular with young families looking for great value, child-friendly breaks.
