A wet and muddy week

Four leaders and twelve participants from the Bolsover Woodland Enterprise group spent a wet and muddy week at YHA Llwyn-y-Celyn in October.

They repaired dry stone walling, rebuilt a bridge over a stream, opened up a nature trail, put up bench seats and laid a hazel hedge to open up the view. And, their speciality, built a Story Telling Circle!

Using whole alder trees that they had cleared to make the walls, slabs of sycamore from Derbyshire to form bench seats, and a throne (the story tellers chair), they have created a woodland theatre.
Next year this will add to the experience of school parties, and provide evening entertainment for families who can listen to stories as dusk settles over the Tarell Valley.

“We set them up with a good breakfast, then provided rain, mud, brambles and a long walk carrying heavy logs,” says YHA manager, Francis Lawson. “And in four days they achieved a transformation of the hostel woods which will benefit visitors for years to come. Well done The Bolsover Group!”

Bolsover Woodlands Enterprise (BWE) is a community co-operative from Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Working with YHA they've created stunning outdoor classrooms and carried out valuable work as volunteers at Borrowdale and Windermere in Cumbria, at Golant in Cornwall, and at Boggle Hole in North Yorkshire. They've also carried out woodland management at Dufton in Cumbria and Bryn Gwynant in Snowdonia.

BWE evolved from a team of people with learning disabilities who trained in conservation work with Groundwork Creswell. The team was known as the Coalfields Environmental Action Team.
It has been operating now for four years as a partnership between the Countryside Service and Social Services as part of the Joint Framework and provides work and training in woodland management, in the Authority’s woodland estate for around 27 adults with a learning disability.
