Sir Chris Bonington officially unveils YHA Ambleside’s £1.42 million facelift

The world-renowned mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington officially re-opened YHA Ambleside on Sunday 28th July, following its £1.42 million facelift earlier this year.

Sir Chris is a huge fan of Youth Hostels and is a regular visitor at YHA Black Sail in Ennerdale. He said: “YHA gave me my introduction to adventure in my early teens first staying at hostels cycling and then climbing in Wales and Scotland. I have many great memories of those early days and it was a real pleasure to be asked to re-open the Ambleside Youth Hostel after its refurbishment which will give the youngsters and families of today excellent affordable accommodation so that they can enjoy the beauty of the Lake District.”

As part of the celebrations, the Youth Hostel invited guests and the local community to take part in outdoor adventures and games, including a family raft race courtesy with YHA Ambleside’s local activity partners; Carnegie Great Outdoors, Total Adventure, Wheaton College, Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and Field Studies Council. Visitors also enjoyed an outdoor barbeque and carvery in the Lakeside Restaurant while being entertained by The Pantasy Steel Band.

Chris Darmon, Chairman of YHA (England and Wales) added: “The team and I were honoured that Sir Chris found time to re-open the Youth Hostel after our refurbishment. He has first-hand experience of how Youth Hostels have changed over the years – they’re very different now to how they were even as recently as 10 years ago. YHA Ambleside’s interior may have changed but like Sir Chris, the hostel team exude a spirit of adventure, passing on their love of the Lake District and what it has to offer to a new generation of staying guests." the hostel team exude a spirit of adventure, passing on their love of the Lake District and what it has to offer to a new generation of staying guests."

YHA (England and Wales) has 20 Youth Hostels in the Lake District National Park. As part of the refurbishment at YHA Ambleside, more washrooms and a number of premium en suite bedrooms with a lake view have been created. As well as total redecoration and furniture throughout, there is also a new reception area and more public facilities, including an education and conference space with the latest audio visual equipment. The newly renovated restaurant, The Lakeside is open throughout the day to guests and the general public to enjoy an array of freshly cooked dishes while soaking in the stunning views across Lake Windermere.

The re-opening of YHA Ambleside has created another world-class Youth Hostel in the charity’s 160-strong portfolio of accommodation throughout England and Wales. The refurbishment of the Youth Hostel is part of YHA’s capital investment programme. Over the past five years YHA (England and Wales) has invested £19.5 million to create a network of world-class Youth Hostels, which include en suite bedrooms, honeymoon suites, licensed bars, restaurants and educational facilities.

Women 1st credits YHA (England Wales) Chief Executive Caroline White with changing the public image of the historic brand. In 2012, YHA was ranked at number four in the best Hotel category, just behind the luxury hotel chains, Sofitel, Hotel Du Vin & Bistro and Malmaison, in the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk Readers' Travel Awards 2012.
