YHA recruiting 70 volunteer managers across England and Wales

Following our best year ever in 2014 and visitor numbers already set to be smashed this year, we're looking to recruit 70 new volunteer managers to run hostels in England and Wales.

The search is now on to find volunteer managers for 25 Youth Hostels. As well as being an opportunity to get involved with us, it’s also an opportunity for people aged over 18 to enhance their CV or brush up on existing management skills.

Volunteers are vital to ensuring that we're financially viable and our network of 160 Youth Hostels can continue to operate and provide accommodation and activities for the many young people and their families that stay each year.

Because of the unique way we were established and our charitable status, we rely heavily on volunteers to ensure our network is sustainable, particularly the smaller properties or those that don’t have restaurants or bars, like YHA Beverley Friary in East Yorkshire.

Last year 2,427 volunteers contributed 176,394 hours of support worth more than £1.1m to YHA. The support of volunteers is enabling us to invest in our network of properties. Since 2010, we have invested more than £31m refurbishing Youth Hostels and opening brand new ones at Castleton in Derbyshire, Cardiff, Brighton and the South Downs.

Katie Smith, our Volunteer Business Partner began her career with us as a volunteer manager, she said: “Taking care of a hostel involves rolling your sleeves up and getting stuck in, but it’s incredibly rewarding. No day is the same and the people that you meet are wonderful.

“I kick-started my career with YHA. Not only was I able to meet some fantastic YHA customers, but I also got to explore new places like Pwll Deri that, if it wasn’t for my volunteering, I would probably have never visited.

“Having a glass of wine outside watching the sunset and chatting to guests about their travels are just some of the wonderful memories I made. I would recommend being a Volunteer Manager to everyone; it’s a fabulous experience.”

Current volunteer manager Sandra Hinchliffe has worked for British Airways as cabin crew for 18 years and, in her spare time, is a volunteer manager. She has been a YHA member for more than 15 years and holidays with us at least 10 times a year. She has been a volunteer manager for one year and has worked at YHAs in Kington in Herefordshire, Cornwall and the Beacon Beacons.

This year, Sandra will be managing YHA Coniston Coppermines in the Lake District from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day. Explaining how she became a volunteer manager Sandra said: “During a break at YHA Kington a hostel manager suggested I enquire about the volunteer manager job. Hostel Managing has given me a new lease of life. I have explored places that I would never have visited before and get a real sense of achievement knowing that I am helping the charity.”

If you have previous experience of customer service and can be a welcoming host, a YHA Volunteer Manager position could be the perfect opportunity for you. The role involves customer care, administration, house-keeping, providing tourist information, answering telephone queries and looking after the security of the hostel. You will receive support from a nearby staffed hostel.

Applications are welcomed from people over the age of 18 who can spare a week a year to volunteer. You can also apply as a couple or friends who would like to volunteer together. For further information please contact http://www.yha.org.uk/volunteering/current-opportunities/volunteer-managers
