The Queen Visits Matlock

The Queen Visits Matlock

Yesterday, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II arrived in the YHA National Office’s hometown of Matlock for a royal visit. In her first visit to the town for 22 years, the YHA patron wore a baby blue coat and matching hat and arrived by East Midlands Trains into Matlock Station. Here, the Queen was presented with flowers by local school children.

After greeting the crowds, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, were driven through the town where thousands of residents had lined the streets in preparation for the royals’ arrival. The crowds cheered and waved Union Jack flags as the royal procession drove slowly past, allowing the Queen to wave to her audience.

The Queen and Prince Philip then visited John Smedley’s at Lea Mills and were greeted by the machinists and factory workers before driving back through the town of Matlock to Chatsworth House where she was presented with a hamper of local produce by local food and drink businesses. The Queen even joked that she might not be able to fit the hamper into her helicopter!

After meeting several Chatsworth employees, the royals then attended a private lunch with the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The weather even held for the occasion, with Derbyshire welcoming warm sunshine all day.
