YHA Day 2014
YHA Day 2014 saw hostels across England and Wales throw open their doors to the general public to show everyone exactly what YHA is all about. Now in its third year, YHA Day serves as a celebration of our work as a hostelling charity.
We really appreciate all the support we get, especially in the communities where we have our hostels. YHA Day is our way of saying thank you and for anyone who hasn’t seen what we have to offer or been through our doors, this is a great chance to find out what we’re all about and to share in the great welcome we offer.
YHA CEO Caroline White
Visitors to the hostels had the chance to explore YHA for themselves and to see what is really on offer. Not only did visitors get the chance to look around the Youth Hostels and grounds during guided tours led by dedicated and enthusiastic staff, but there were also a number of activities on offer to keep them occupied throughout the day.
Amongst the highlights were Proms in the Peak, a Union Jack waving celebration in the grounds of YHA Castleton Losehill Hall; a Lost Property Charity Shop at YHA London St Paul’s; and the Keswick Charity Cycle Sportive in the Lake District. Add in the usual tea and cakes that you’ll find at any self-respecting open day and you’ve got a recipe for the best YHA Day to date.
YHA Day was an unprecedented success with record visitor numbers across the sites as activities ranged from a coconut shy at YHA Boggle Hole to inflatable sumo wrestling at YHA National Forest. There was even a mini music festival at YHA Treyarnon which inspired a massive Twitter response- YHA ROCKS!
From YHA Treyarnon in the South West to YHA Ambleside in the Lake District and the newly refurbished YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass in Wales, all of our regions played a fantastic part in making sure that this year was a rip-roaring success.
All of the money raised from YHA Day has been donated to Breaks for Kids, which helps children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds when they take part in a school or community group break away from home.
Here’s to the next YHA Day! Keep logging on for details about YHA Day 2015 – hope to see you there!
