Walking festivals to explore Britain this spring

While you may be familiar with some of the great walking festivals of Britain's National Parks, spring brings with it walking festivals that also allow you to explore often-overlooked areas of the British countryside with like-minded individuals.

The Dudley Walking Festival runs from Saturday April 27th to Sunday May 5th, with a range of walks around the hills, canals and even disused railway lines of the area, ranging in length from six to 26 miles. For a nominal fee of a couple of pounds, you can enjoy guidance from local experts and all the flora and fauna the area has to offer. Councillor Tracy Wood, Dudley’s cabinet member for environment and culture, told Stourbridge News: "The Dudley Trail attracts over 2,000 people every year from in and outside of the borough and the atmosphere on the day is amazing."

A comprehensive range of walks is also planned for Corby Walking Festival (May 4th - 6th). Long walks are planned around Lyveden New Bield, and the Welland Valley, with guidance from experienced trail walkers from the Ramblers. Trails will weave through Corby's ancient woodland, while other trails will have photographical and historical themes. Yet there is even more on offer with a demonstration of the fast-growing craze of Nordic walking, and plenty for families to enjoy with children's rides, animal petting and archery, among other things.

Lincolnshire is not somewhere that often springs to mind for walkers, yet the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival is one of the biggest of its kind in Britain. Over 100 walks are planned covering a total in excess of 540 miles between May18th and June 2nd. These range from short one-mile strolls suitable for wheelchair users, to day-long treks and even a 36-mile hike with an overnight stop in the middle. The Wolds is Lincolnshire's only Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and numerous organisations have come together to devise a range of trails which will showcase it to visitors.

If you fancy taking part in one of these great events or any similar festivals around the country, why not make a proper break of it with a stay at one of our great-value local hostels?
