Staff Ideas into reality

Kindly provided by Karl Shepherdson

My YHA diary has been busy and looking forward it's rather busy too. I was in Bristol a couple of weeks ago at a routine Board of Trustees meeting. This was my first full meeting as the Vice Chairman. I have started to discover and appreciate that my new role is now increasingly behind the scenes. What do I mean by this I hear you shout!? My email inbox and voicemail messages have significantly increased. I've found that being a National Officer means the I have to act as a sounding board more often, and that decisions get sense checked by the officer team before going to a full Board meeting. There are often a few tweaks made in this iterative process between the Chief Executive/Executive Team and the National Officers along the way. I found myself back in London on the 9th October for the annual general meeting of Southern England Regional Council. I was asked to give a presentation on our plans for the future, so I focussed on our plans for new hostels and major upgrades into 2011 and 2012. Those attending also got an opportunity to feed into the design of our planned small hostel refurbishments at places like YHA Black Sail and YHA Tintagel - who said you can't say how large you want the self catering kitchens! Other regional AGMs are taking place soon, for instance the AGM for Wales will take place on 13th November in Cardiff - and I'll be there too! I also made a visit back to YHA St Pancras on 15th October. This trip was to be part of the judging panel of 'Brainwave'. To those outside YHA this was an opportunity for YHA staff to propose innovative and creative ideas in a Dragons Den kind-a-way. There was a great holiday prize on offer and we had three categories, these were Innovation, Sustainability and Experience. There were loads of submissions but the top three from each category were shorlisted to come to London and present their ideas. The winning idea in each category is guaranteed to be implemented. I really looked forward to this event and it did indeed exceed my expectations, it hit all the right notes in my book of things we should be doing in YHA. I'm always open to great ideas, and you all have my email address if you have a brainwave one day.
