Spotlight on YHA Stratford-upon-Avon

To hostel, or not to hostel? Sigh no more ladies and gents; YHA Stratford-upon-Avon lets you explore the historic town for a mere trifle. Just two miles from the birthplace of Shakespeare, our Georgian mansion is perfect for family breaks and school trips. Visit Warwick Castle, catch a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company, or make merry at Hemmingford's Bar and Restaurant with our fun in-hostel events.

The Hostel

Whether you're avoiding a winter of discontent or enjoying some al fresco midsummer madness, YHA Stratford-upon-Avon has serious year-round appeal. This spacious mansion is set in three acres of grounds and has all the facilities you need for a comfortable stay. Our on-site Hemmingford's Bar and Restaurant is a fab place to relax and meet new people - look out for Jazz Sundays, quizzes and local bands. We've got some delicious food and drink for you to enjoy too, including great beers on tap and tasty homemade pizzas. If you're a school group, you'll be spoilt for choice with end-of-trip discos, imaginative drama workshops and a games room. We've also got free Wi-Fi, individual bunk lights and plenty of en-suite rooms, so you're not stuck in the Tudor period. For something a little different, why not book one of our luxurious camping pods in the grounds? They're fully insulated to keep you cosy and contain a kitchenette and an en-suite bathroom - ideal for an outdoor escape with some fabulous home comforts.

Shakespeare Town

If you're barmy about The Bard, you've come to the right place - Stratford-upon-Avon is celebrating Shakespeare's 400th anniversary this April. From a Sonnet Rap Marathon from rap artist Devon Glover, to concerts using instruments from Tudor times, it's all happening this month. Come and enjoy a family fun day from the Royal Shakespeare Company; brimming with activities and workshops inspired by familiar stories. New Place - Shakespeare's home for 19 years - will also be reopening as a major new attraction after a restoration project, along with his old schoolroom. And of course, there's nothing like going to see a world-class performance from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Experience Will's classics like Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, or watch the RSC tackle Ben Johnson's The Alchemist or Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. Students and history buffs can even learn about his whole family at (his wife) Anne Hathaway's Cottage or step back in time at (his mum) Mary Marden's Farm.

Family Attractions

There's more to Stratford-upon-Avon than Shakespeare and our hostel makes a great base to explore Warwickshire. Don't skip a grand day out at Warwick Castle - it's one of England's best medieval structures and kids will love playing in the grounds. Look out for the castle's exciting live-action events, such as "The Castle Dungeon", "Flight of the Eagles" and "Warwick Ghosts Alive". For a more relaxing pace, book one of the leisurely boat trips on the River Avon and enjoy this picturesque part of England from the water. For cogs, springs and gadgets galore, visit the Mechanical Art and Design Museum (MAD) to get your hands on a unique collection of exhibits. Or be surrounded by shimmering colours, plants and creepy crawlies at the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm - the UK's largest tropical butterfly paradise. If you just can't get enough of Shakespeare's time, why not visit Tudor World? You'll be learning about sixteenth century peasants, the plague and poo faster than you can say "Hey nonny nonny"!

Walking and Cycling

YHA Stratford-upon-Avon is minutes from the rolling Warwickshire countryside and we know some wonderful walks from our doorstep. Pack a picnic and wind down with a peaceful stroll beside the River Avon - it runs near our hostel and you can spend the whole day wildlife-watching. We're super handy for cyclists too and the hostel even held a cycling festival for YHA Day, complete with free bike checks and challenges. And of course, the town centre has a fascinating guided walk that runs every day of the year. Why not scare yourself silly on the award-winning Stratford Town Ghost Walk? It makes a memorable end to a school trip. So what are you waiting for? Book a stay near the town of Shakespeare and write your own story at YHA Stratford-upon-Avon.
