Spotlight on YHA Leominster

Spotlight on YHA Leominster

Want a cosy break in England's cider capital? YHA Leominster used to be a workhouse for a Benedictine Monastery - now it sits just a stone's throw away from the town's fun Medieval Pageant. Explore the historic houses and gardens of the Marches, or eat, drink and be merry in the streets of our pretty market town. We're great for taking on the Mortimer Trail and Herefordshire's Cider Route too.

The Hostel

Our small but comfy hostel is a Herefordshire home-from-home, complete with a courtyard garden for daydreaming in the sunshine. The building is part of the Old Priory complex; part of a Benedictine monastery that dated back to 1123 and was built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon nunnery (sorry ladies). We're hugely grateful to our awesome volunteers and we host regular events to give the hostel a bit of TLC. Look out for our gorgeous tile mural - it was presented to us by ECHO; a local organisation that offers volunteering opportunities for disabled people. Ask us about the local landmarks shown on there, like the ducking stool in Priory Church next door! YHA Leominster is self-catering only, but it's a perfect opportunity to try some of the area's yummy cheese and cider. We've also got an addictive gaming table for kids, plenty of good books and a fab location only a few minutes away from the centre. By the time you've left, you'll love our town as much as we do. And before you ask, it's pronounced "Lemster".

Leominster Town

Leominster is a pretty town with a bustling community atmosphere - it has a real affiliation with flowers and you'll find plants and gardening goodies everywhere. On Fridays, why not head over to the market in Corn Square to pick up some delicious local supplies? Bring plenty of money for a shopping spree as the streets are packed with quirky little businesses. Expect charming Black-and-White buildings, narrow Dickensian alleys and plenty more to delight your architectural eye. The town is fantastic for antiques too, so don't miss the Merchants House for a browse and a cuppa. Our local museum tells the story of this small but beautiful town, with artefacts and stories from pre-Roman to present. Best of all, Leominster Medieval Pageant takes place all around the Priory Church - right next to YHA Leominster. Step back in time for a weekend of displays, finely-dressed performers and workshops for all the family. And of course, a visit wouldn't be complete without a peek inside the legendary Mousetrap Cheese Shop.

Family Attractions

There’s a lot more to Herefordshire than cider and cheese - our location on the English and Welsh border is packed with historical gems. Discover the treasures and opulent interiors inside Berrington Hall; one of master architect Henry Holland's few buildings to survive intact. You could spend the day climbing trees in the park, dressing up as a Lord or Lady, or having a go at one of the family-friendly quizzes. If you can't get enough of our medieval magic, visit Hampton Court for its atmospheric period rooms and award-winning gardens. Or head to fellow historic Black-and-White town Ludlow to explore its ruined castle - it has a nationally-acclaimed food and drink festival too. For something completely different, why not learn about the world of cider-making at Hereford's amazing Cider Museum? Kids can learn about the impressive equipment and there's a brilliantly boozy gift shop to make adults smile too. Further afield, the Small Breeds Farm and Owl Centre is a beautifully designed park with one of the best collections of owls in Europe.

Outdoor Activities

Want to swing through the trees, power through the countryside on a quad bike, or get messy with paintball? Oaker Wood Leisure is ideal for adventurers and sits less than 5 miles away from us. YHA Leominster is perfect for walking and cycling holidays too, with 47 acres of exotic arboretum and woodland paths at our nearby Queenswood Country Park. If you fancy a stomp through the Marches of England, take on the Mortimer Trail for a dose of medieval history and scenic countryside. We adore the Westonbury Mill Water Gardens too, so don't forget to stop by for an unusual day out among the flowers. Then obviously there's the Herefordshire Cider Route; a circular route around some of the UK's finest producers. So what are you waiting for? Eat, drink and be merry with a YHA Leominster adventure!
