Spotlight on YHA Langdale

Spotlight on YHA Langdale

YHA Langdale is one of our most beautiful hostels - everyone is blown away by our fairytale architecture and Lake District views. With a National Trust arboretum on the doorstep and walks in every direction, we're perfect for family holidays, activity breaks and weddings.

Fall in love with our history and elegant social spaces, or use us as a base to explore some of the best Lakeland sights.

The Hostel

As you step onto our lawn you get the biggest shock at how magical our building looks. For a start, we have views all the way down to Windermere and Bowness, plus our neighbours are the Langdale Pikes. Kids will happily run around and around in our maze-like hostel, but don't worry - we've got a fun treasure hunt to keep them busy! Our huge mansion is ideal for imaginative parties and wedding receptions; we've hosted everything from hot tubs to fire-eating. How about taking over the whole of YHA Langdale with your friends and family on Exclusive Hire? You could host your own murder mystery or live action role-playing weekend from just £6 per person. Or let our passionate staff show off their hosting skills at our Supper Club - we've got an excellent range of beers with the odd local cask ale on offer too. There's even a cosy tearoom that's open to the public, so you can chill out on our sunny picnic benches and have a look inside the hostel yourself. Look out for our yummy homemade cakes and treat yourself to a lemon drizzle, spicy apple or ginger creation.

Our History

Our lovely old mansion is a tapestry of different styles, with some parts of the building dating right from the 16th century. YHA Langdale's personality is decidedly Victorian, with labyrinthine corridors (popular with dreamers and kids alike) and elaborate decor. Don't miss the 11 acres of landscaped garden on our doorstep - a fairyland of windy pathways, steps and romantic stone benches. Our impressive Great Hall boasts antlers, a huge stone fireplace and a wooden beamed ceiling. We're hoping to restore and reopen the mysterious minstrels’ gallery too. An unusual hostel like this must have some stories, and you won't be disappointed. Take our history tour to hear tales such as "The Poachers Cell" - a walk-in safe with a door 6 inches thick. Legend has it one of our owners used to lock poachers inside until the police arrived, but now we just lock naughty hostellers in there. Unlike some historic houses, YHA Langdale has an immense sense of fun, mischief and warmth. And our enthusiastic staff will bend over backwards to make you feel like one of the family.

Outdoor Activities

If you're looking for a hostel with instant access to the Lake District fells, you can't go wrong with YHA Langdale. There are exciting routes all around us and you only have to step outside to be in the heart of nature. Our National Trust arboretum has exotic flora and fauna, wildlife trails, and three tiers of gardens to enjoy. Or look out for nearby sporting events like the Fred Whitton Challenge; a 112-mile cycling sportive around the Lake District. If you're an experienced fell runner, try the epic Langdale Horseshoe - a tough-as-nails route across the slippery rocks. Many of our guests come for the easy access to the Langdale Pikes, but some also do giants like Scafell Pike from here too. We're also ideal for tackling iconic fell walking routes like Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, or why not take a gentle stroll through the picturesque Elterwater valley? With so much walking right in front of you, our location is a dream come true for outdoor activity groups. Our mountain bike routes are not for the faint hearted either, and there are many spectacular climbing spots in the challenging crags near us.

Lakeland Attractions

Grasmere is less than 2 miles from YHA Langdale and tourists come from over the globe to enjoy its shops, cafes and famous gingerbread. Dove Cottage & Wordsworth Museum are in walking distance too, so you can spend time looking at the same views that inspired some of our best-loved poetry, or see "the loveliest spot that man hath ever found" at Georgian villa Allan Bank. We love adventuring through the woods to the Merz Barn; German artist Kurt Schwitters' last great Dadaist project and a shrine to modern art. We've got some cracking pubs on our doorstep too, so pop in at the Britannia Inn for a pint of ale and some pub grub. So what are you waiting for? Book a stay in a fairytale mansion at YHA Langdale.
