Snowdonia not all about Snowdon

With Easter on its way, many people will be looking to head towards some of Britain's National Parks for some long walks in the countryside. Yet one top warden is warning inexperienced hikers to choose their destinations carefully.

Snowdon warden Helen Pye claims that Wales' top peak should be avoided by all but the most experienced and fittest walkers at the current moment, because although spring is officially here, the continued wintery weather makes conditions at the summit difficult to endure and treacherous underfoot.

"Although it's spring, there's an unusual amount of snow on the peaks at the moment and in some places you can be thigh-deep in snow. That's why we are asking everyone who ventures out to the mountain peaks to ensure that they come prepared with the correct skills and tools."

However, just because a walk up Snowdon might be better saved for another bank holiday, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty on offer in the rest of the park. Ms Pye recommends the Foel Caerynwch walk near Brithdir for a spectacular view of the Meirionydd hills, or the Cwm Penamnen walk near Dolwyddelan taking in an old Roman road.

"Remember that the peaks of Snowdonia have been here for thousands of years, and they'll continue to be here in the summer!" she added. "So why not embark on one of the other walks this Easter and come back later in the year to venture higher, when the weather is kinder and daylight is longer?"

As well as walking routes, there are hundreds of attractions - including climbing centres and a number of railway-related sites - and places of historical interest to enjoy in Snowdonia, many of which are helpfully listed on the VisitSnowdonia website.
