Lottery funding boosts activities initiatives

There is a growing consensus in Britain that more needs to be done to improve the nation's health through extra physical activity. Numerous studies have suggested that even a simple stroll in the countryside, if done reasonably regularly, can make a significant difference to physical wellbeing.

Yet the latest study from The National Lottery Good Causes suggests that it is not necessarily lack of inclination which prevents people from being more active - cost and time also present big barriers. In response, the Big Lottery Fund has announced a £40 million investment in initiatives which aim to get people off the sofa and more active.

"This announcement of further investment into increasing physical activity, such as walking, is very welcome," said Simon Barnett, director of Walking Programmes at the Ramblers. "Support of this kind is essential if we are to reverse current trends and truly tackle the high levels of inactivity in this country, and the problems that result. We've seen first-hand the difference walking can make to people's lives. We look forward to seeing many more projects working in local communities to promote walking in the future."

The walking association is doing its bit to get people active with Get Walking Week, which runs from May 4th to the 11th. Hundreds of free short walks of five miles or less will be led by experienced walk leaders throughout Britain, taking place in the countryside, cities and the coast. It's a great opportunity to start walking for leisure and see exactly what the countryside has to offer with the benefit of expert guidance. The Ramblers says that these walks are the "perfect opportunity to discover the freedom, fresh air and fitness that comes with exploring the great outdoors".

Take a look at Get Walking Week's dedicated webpage for some of the routes on offer - and don't be afraid to look a little further afield for some interesting scenery - a stay at a great-value YHA hostel will really make a break of it.
