Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Wasdale Hall

YHA Wasdale Hall sits on the shore of England's deepest lake and in the shadow of its highest mountain - there's no wonder this impressive 19th century manor is our Hostel of the Week.

A huge hit with adventurers, this luxurious hostel is perfect for tackling the dramatic Scafell Pike and everyone is stunned by Britain's Favourite View just outside the door. Recharge in its spacious oak-panelled rooms and prepare to be inspired.

Location

Residents swear that YHA Wasdale Hall is "the best place in the world" and it's hard to argue with them! As the birthplace of British mountaineering, the rugged landscape of awe-inspiring craggy peaks just calls out to be explored and you'll meet many hardcore climbers and hikers who adore it here. Hidden away in the remote West Lakes, this is the ultimate place to appreciate nature and get away from it all, so bring change for the good old-fashioned payphone and leave your gadgets behind! There is so much natural beauty here and the hostel grounds stretch right down to the lake; fantastic for a relaxing picnic on the pebbles. Many scenic woodland walks start right from the doorstep and the friendly staff are happy to share their fave routes with you.

History

YHA Wasdale Hall is one of our grandest hostels and was built in the 19th century - owner Stansfield Rawson chose to build in a distinctive late Medieval/Tudor style, adding to the building's unique charm! Recently the hostel has been restored and decorated to its original glory; you'll find period features like wood-panelling, beautifully carved fireplaces and leaded windows still intact. The elaborate half-timbered facade, gabled roof and cornicing hint to the hostel's National Trust heritage and the social spaces feel like a stately home. Feel free to relax on the comfortable leather sofas, surrounded by a library of good books, or to share stories with your new friends after an active day in the fells. You can even enjoy a game of pool in the cellar or try some refreshing local ales - look out for tasty homemade specials too. The gorgeous dining room has views over the lake and is sure to make you feel like lord or lady of the manor.

Activities and Sports

Climbers, hikers and adventure-seekers flock to YHA Wasdale Hall, with many coming here solely to take on the infamous Scafell Pike. England's highest mountain has inspired everyone from Wainwright to Wordsworth (ask about classic walks nearby!), and it provides a long yet rewarding climb. The marvellously pointy Napes Needle overlooks us too, so follow in the footsteps of the Abraham Brothers if you fancy a challenge. Serious mountain bikers will find bouldery terrain to tackle nearby and the hall's unique lakeside location makes it perfect for watersports like kayaking, canoeing and paddling. YHA Wasdale Hall is an unbeatable hub for mountainous Lake District sport, with classic fell running races like the Wasdale Horseshoe and the awe-inspiring Wasdale X Triathlon in the area. If you're planning an active break here, remember to bring your equipment along for a safe and satisfying stay!

Family Attractions

If the idea of climbing Scafell Pike makes you feel wobbly, there's plenty of family-friendly Lake District culture to discover nearby. The atmospheric Muncaster Castle has acres of wonderful gardens to explore and is home to the World Owl Centre (not to mention a few resident ghosts). There are dog shows and lots of traditional countryside fun at the Wasdale Shepherd's Meet, and don't miss the annual World's Biggest Liar competition at Santon Bridge! You can even take in the spectacular scenery by rail with a ride past the mountains on the Ravenglass and Eskdale steamtrain. So what are you waiting for? Be part of YHA Wasdale Hall's history and book a stay!
