Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Treyarnon

Want surfing, live music and one of the best sunsets in the UK? Hang loose 50 metres from the waves at YHA Treyarnon - one of our hippest hostels ever! Learn how to surf with our watersports package or explore the sun-drenched coast of Cornwall. We've got 50 years of hostel experience and tasty bites at our new cafe too. With our laid back vibe, gorgeous beach and awesome line up of gigs (and ales), you'll relax the Cornish way in no time.

Watersports, Walking & Cycling

Where else can you learn to ride the waves on the first beach in the UK to have surfing? There's golden sand just yards away from YHA Treyarnon's doorstep waiting for your footprints. We offer an adrenaline-packed watersports package with Harlyn Surf School - described as "the best Surf School on the North Cornish coast" by The Times. Whether its surfing, paddleboarding or coasteering (for the uninitiated, a combo of rock climbing, swimming and exploring caves!) Harlyn's experienced staff will ensure you have an incredible time. Eager for the 'swell magnet' of the Cornish Coast? Walk across the breezy headland to Constantine and Booby's Bay; the waves there are mind-blowing. If rambling's more your thing, tackle the beautiful South West Coast Path and discover its sheltered bays and rugged cliffs on foot. Or hire a bike from Padstow and enjoy the Camel Trail - there are some lovely quiet spots along the disused railway line; perfect for a picnic or some birdwatching.

The Hostel

YHA Treyarnon has been a hostel for over half a century and has an atmosphere that rocks more than the cliffs. Surfers, music-lovers and families flock to our stunning location and we're always up for some fun times. Our fabulously refurbished Trey Bay Cafe Bar is a hub for both guests and the public - pop in to sample our ice cream shack for yourself. We're really proud of our fresh daily specials (don't miss Freaky Fish Fridays) and our quirky surfing-inspired dining room has a sea view to die for. Anything goes here, so expect guest ales on tap, dancing on the bar and like-minded travellers with stories to tell. Or just chill out with a book, bond over a board game or watch the killer waves outside. If the sound of the sea gets you to sleep at night, our spacious campsite behind the hostel is open all year round. Campers can feel close to nature and still use our in-hostel facilities - you're even welcome to use our gas BBQ or set up a campfire on the beach. And in winter? We've got a blazing fire most nights and our sunsets are spectacular all year round. You can even take over the whole hostel for a party weekend or family gathering.

Cornwall Attractions

If you can tear yourself away from playing games and building sandcastles on the beach, we're close to lots of family-friendly Cornish attractions. Padstow is just four miles from YHA Treyarnon - spend the day wandering around this charming fishing port or catch a boat trip from its picturesque harbour. Animal lovers can take a relaxing sealife safari to catch a glimpse of seals, dolphins and basking sharks; a memorable experience for all ages. Little ones missing their favourite cartoons? Keep the kids giggling all holiday with a day out to Cornwall's Crealy and meet TV characters, animals and more at this welcoming adventure park. Newquay is a short drive away from us too; it's been voted one of the UK's fave seaside towns and has an award-winning zoo and aquarium not far from its centre. Or check out one of Cornwall's most famous landmarks with a day at the Eden Project - its iconic indoor rainforest and lush gardens are just a 45 minute drive from us. Whatever you choose to do, we'll be waiting to help you chill out at the end of the day.

Music at Trey Bay Cafe

Love music? YHA Treyarnon is THE hostel to stay at. Don't miss our regular gig nights and catch live bands playing under the stars and inside our Trey Bay Cafe. Expect fairy lights, fresh new sounds and plenty of energetic dancing - all with a unique backdrop of the beach. This Friday we've got the Cataclews playing, a lively traditional folk band who'll be up fiddling until late. Look out for open mic nights with Mr Chick and an exciting mix of genres - we've hosted Australian roots band The Floating Bridges and many upcoming singer/songwriters. Arthur Cunnington is playing this month, a husky-voiced guitar virtuoso admired by Radiohead's Ed O'Brien. Why not bring your guitar along for a strum by the waves. So what are you waiting for? Get ready to relax in serious style with a stay at YHA Treyarnon.
