Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA London Thameside

Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA London Thameside

Our last (but not least!) Hostel of the Week in the capital, YHA London Thameside lets you experience the city like a true EastEnder. With hidden gem Rotherhithe on our doorstep, you can explore the local area's maritime heritage and pretty green spaces.

Alternatively, use us as a friendly base for a school trip or bargain break - the city centre's famous attractions are just a short ride away.

The Hostel

First time in the UK? You're in good hands at YHA London Thameside - this handy hostel is fantastic for groups and we've got everything you need for an urban adventure. Purpose-built in the 1990s, we welcome thousands of people from around the world every year and offer beds from just £15. Where else can you stay overnight in London for so cheap? The Youth Hostel has all the facilities you need for a comfy stay; all rooms are en-suite, so you don't need to join the dreaded corridor queue in the morning. Plus, you can relax knowing we've got free Wi-Fi and computers with internet access to use. And unlike some YHAs in London, we can provide a yummy cooked breakfast, complete with bacon, eggs and all your fave trimmings. We've also got our delicious Metro Menu on offer - dig into a sharing platter with friends or create your dream pizza. Or if you're planning a night out (we ARE open 24 hours after all), our bar has a great selection of drinks to enjoy. There's a self-catering kitchen with plenty of equipment and space to sit and eat too. YHA London Thameside may look more functional than fancy, but we've got a welcoming community feel all of our own. Ask us to point you in the way of our local legends.

Explore Rotherhithe

If you prefer the road less travelled, YHA London Thameside has some great alternative attractions right on the doorstep. Beat the crowds with a day out in "London's Hidden Gem" Rotherhithe. This peaceful area is steeped in fascinating maritime history and there are surprises around every corner. Did you know Rotherhithe was home to world's first underwater tunnel or that the famous Mayflower ship set sail from here? Don't miss a visit to the Brunel Museum - it's a must for budding engineers and events are held in its atmospheric underground chambers. Film buffs can check out the Rotherhithe Picture Gallery too; home to a huge collection of visual treasures and a thriving cinema club. Or relax with a drink at the Mayflower Pub and follow in the footsteps of the Pilgrim Fathers who boarded the Mayflower to Massachusetts. Or for an educational taste of the countryside in the heart of London, Surrey Docks Farm boasts a history trail and everything from bees to cattle. You can even enjoy a haven for wildlife at the Lavender Pond Nature Park - a recreation of the wetland habitats that used to line the River Thames. In fact, you don't even have to venture to the centre to enjoy a brilliant day out.

London Attractions

Sandwiched between the bright lights of Canary Wharf (worth a visit in itself) and the iconic Tower Bridge, YHA London Thameside is well connected to the wider city. The hostel is close to transport links to the town centre, with buses stopping right outside and an Overground station just five minutes away. Want to see classics like Madame Tussauds, the London Dungeon and St Paul's Cathedral for less? We offer discounts on many of the most famous London attractions, so don't forget to ask us at reception and save yourself pounds. If you're feeling fit, Shakespeare's Globe is less than an hour's walk away - an impressive recreation of the iconic bankside theatre, with an exhibition underneath. Or take a riverside stroll to the world-famous Tower Bridge to see its magnificent engine rooms, breathtaking views and glass floor. We're relatively near the Tower of London too; home to the crown jewels and a grisly history of torture, imprisonment and beheadings. With our 24 hour access, you can explore the city until the Surrey Docks Farm cows come home. Our staff are experts on local nightlife and know what's going on nearby, so remember to ask us about our favourite pubs, clubs and music venues.

City School Trips

YHA London Thameside is ideal for great value school trips and we can offer accommodation for over 200 people. We're used to big groups, so bring on the excited kids enjoying their first trip to the capital! The Youth Hostel has dorm rooms of every size, a happy and casual atmosphere, plus plenty of space for young people to relax and chill out. We really champion the Breaks for Kids mission and love seeing school and college groups experiencing our vibrant city. And with modern essentials like free Wi-Fi, computers and satisfying meals, there are lots of good things for children to write home about. How about taking a walk along the Thames Path, a healthy way to see the sights? So what are you waiting for - explore London's famous landmarks for a budget price at YHA London Thameside!
