Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Edale

Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Edale

With the mighty Kinder Scout on its doorstep and miles of wilderness on every side, YHA Edale is the perfect escape for weekend adventurers. Our first Hostel of the Week in the Peak District National Park, this fully renovated hostel is a firm fave with anyone who loves the great outdoors. Whether you're tackling the windswept peaks, exploring local caverns, or pumping adrenaline at our amazing Activity Centre, YHA Edale's location is a top retreat.

The Hostel

After a £250,000 renovation and bucketloads of TLC, YHA Edale looks better than ever and is ready to give guests a warm welcome! Expect inspiring murals, refreshed bedrooms, stylish decor and all the modern facilities you need for a comfy break in the Peak District. This popular hostel's otherworldly location and breathtaking views are ideal for an active weekend away, so leave your stress behind and burn off some steam on the dramatic peaks. You'll find lots of friendly hikers, climbers and mountain bikers relaxing on our black leather sofas, and our back garden is literally open access moorland. Conveniently self-contained with delicious hearty meals, a well-stocked bar and Kinder Plateau and Mam Tor within reach, families don't need to stray far from YHA Edale to have a wild adventure. The grand country house is one of the highest residencies of the peaks (but we still have Wi-Fi) and you'll never forget waking up to a view of the sprawling Dark Peak and towering majestic trees.

Family Attractions

The Peak District is full of fascinating culture and geographical oddities, so if you fancy a weekend exploring local landmarks then YHA Edale makes a great base. We're near to three awe-inspiring showcaves, with an unforgettable boat journey at Speedwell Cavern, centuries of mining and fab jewellery at the Blue John Cavern, and bizarre rock formations at Treak Cliff Cavern. Love your history and stately homes? Derbyshire has some of the best - we're a short drive from the grand gardens of Chatsworth House, fun historical events of Haddon Hall, or the backdrop to where Lizzie meets Darcy in Pride and Prejudice at Lyme Park (swoon). The wonderful Chestnut Centre otter, owl and wildlife park is one of our nearest attractions and it's perfect for animal lovers of all ages to see and learn more about nature. You can even take the kids for some open air swimming in nearby Hathersage, a real treat during the summer.

Walking and Cycling

Walk to the bottom of YHA Edale's garden and you're on the way to climbing Kinder Scout - our hostel sits on its southern flank. Our helpful staff know all the best routes, so ask them about guided walks nearby. Forget driving, many footpaths start from our doorstep and take you across scenic dales, hills and moors for an invigorating day out. If you like a challenge, the first stretch of the Pennine Way National Trail starts from Edale, or you can hike to Kinder Downfall; the highest waterfall in the Peak District! Half-day walks to Druid's Stone and Madwoman's Stones really rock, or ramble across the valley to climb famous landmark Mam Tor - don't miss the atmospheric Iron Age Hill Fort at the top. We're at the centre of the Dark Peak's cross-country mountain bike trails too, and we have great cycling facilities to look after your bike. Experienced mountain bikers can tackle Jacob's Ladder, or the whole family can enjoy the ever-popular Monsal Trail.

Activity Centre

Adventurers flock to YHA Edale's amazing Activity Centre, so book your place early for one of our thrilling packages this Autumn! From handy navigation courses to action-packed activity holidays, our experienced instructors will help you to build skills and make memories. Whether you're a group of seasoned experts or a keen family of novices, Edale Activity Centre offers great value training for orienteering, caving, climbing and watersports. Hold your breath on the high ropes, learn how to navigate the dramatic Dark Peak, or get wet with canoeing and raft building - you can do all here and more.
