Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Canterbury

Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Canterbury

With a £600k makeover under its belt and decor colourful as a stained glass window, YHA Canterbury feels perfectly in tune with the city's famous cathedral. Our 4-star Victorian villa bursts with character - making it a fab base to explore Canterbury's irresistible mix of Roman and Medieval history, quirky pubs and gorgeous gardens. Our new Lord of the Rings-inspired wooden cabins are just one more reason to make a pilgrimage here.

The Hostel

YHA Canterbury has a winning combination of period charm, bold contemporary decor and modern comforts, not to mention a lovely suburban setting just 10 minutes from the town centre! Over 17,000 guests stay with us every year and our formidable 'Ellerslie' building moves with the times. Along with stylish refurbishments and vivid hues of paint, as a listed building we treasure our beautiful gothic features. Look out for wooden panels with ornate cathedral-like carvings, an impressive original staircase and our grand entrance. We have a clientele as eclectic as our patchwork sofas, so mingle in our comfy lounge to hear Canterbury Tales from international groups, families and solo travellers. Our literary-inspired rooms have individual lights, sockets in every bunk and seating to chill out and make friends on the corridors outside. If you're peckish from a long journey, we sell an exciting menu of buildable burgers, pizzas and snacks. Or get creative in our shiny new self-catering kitchen - there's handy Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury's just minutes away. Canterbury is crazy about beer, so come join us in the bar for local ales like Canterbury Jack, Whitstable Bay and Spitfire.

City of Canterbury

Kent is known as the Garden of England and Canterbury is the jewel in its crown. One of the UK's most-visited cities, it contains a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising of Canterbury Cathedral, St Martin's Church and St Augustine's Abbey. The winding cobbled streets ooze history and you can spend hours getting lost in the maze of extraordinary old buildings and boutique shops. Don't miss the Canterbury Roman Museum - complete with a preserved house from the original Roman street level under your feet. Or meet costumed pilgrims and experience the medieval sights, sounds and smells of Chaucer's stories at The Canterbury Tales attraction. If you love messing about in boats, the Historic River Tour offers an entertaining look into the city's past from the lovely River Stour. Like our hostel, there's an addictive mix of old and new in Canterbury, and you'll find a thriving scene of theatre, cultural events and festivals. Want to party like it's 1399? The Steinbeck and Shaw nightclub does heavenly cocktails and the Old Brewery Tavern hosts regular bands and DJs. Over 50 pubs are crammed into the city - relax in 14th century warmth at its oldest The Parrot, or try interesting craft beers brewed on-site at The Foundry.

Walking, Cycling & Coast

With so many stories to tell, Canterbury has many guided walks, audio tours and (of course) a spooky ghost hunt to join in with. We love walking along the medieval walls and there are many lush green spaces to make you forget you're in a city. The cathedral gardens are particularly gorgeous and there are many pretty villages, areas of ancient woodland and river walks nearby. With a secure lit bike shed, plenty of local trail knowledge and a cycle hire and repair shop 10 minutes away, YHA Canterbury gives a warm welcome to cyclists too. If you fancy a day at the seaside, no problem - we've got the best of both worlds and sit just seven miles from the coast. Relax with a delicious bag of fish and chips on the historic docks of Whitstable, a charming coastal town just 15 minutes away from us. Herne Bay is also nearby, packed with traditional seafront fun and boasting miles of picturesque coastline to explore on foot or by bike. Look out for Recluver Towers; the atmospheric site of an ancient Roman fort. Why not experience the full beauty of our area with a break exploring the city, coast and surrounding countryside? Blow away the cobwebs with a hike in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty south of Canterbury.

Arctic Cabins

If you haven't seen our "precious" new arrivals yet, take a peek in our back garden at The Shire. Our wonderful arctic cabins are named after characters from Lord of the Rings; in honour of our very own Canterbury-born Orlando Bloom. With their lovely wood smell still lingering, these cosy octagonal cabins make a magical break from the norm. Our guests love the hobbit theme and luxurious little extras like flowers, plush rugs and power sockets. You don't even have to venture outside - these warm little huts include a handy en-suite bathroom, a kitchenette with fridge and microwave, and space for all the family. Between five brave companions, they're incredible value too. So what are you waiting for? Book a stay and see why Canterbury's been a hot-spot since the Middle Ages!
