Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Boggle Hole

Ahoy there, it's time for one of our oldest and best loved hostels - Yorkshire's wonderfully-named YHA Boggle Hole - to be showcased as our Hostel of the Week! Nestled in a smuggler's cove and packed with quirky pirate-themed secrets, our extra special Hostel of the Week is unbeatable for seaside family breaks. With a beach on the doorstep, lots to do inside and a creative £1.2 million renovation under its belt, you'll never forget the magical atmosphere and perfect location of YHA Boggle Hole.

Hostel History

Our iconic hostel reopened in May after an eight month transformation and it has never been more memorable and unique. You'll find endless imaginative little touches like Davy Jones's Locker - a chest with a hidden hatch underneath for your dirty laundry - and handmade mannequins of mermaids and sea monsters. The stylish bar is decorated with shells and driftwood and you'll love snuggling up with a cosy throw next to our wood burning stove. We have quiet nooks and crannies to relax in like the Captain's Stateroom lounge, plus our brand new Crow's Nest annexe offers gorgeous bedrooms looking out to sea. Our renovation is all thanks to the Coastal Communities Fund and Hostelling International Sustainable Fund, not to mention many generous donations from travellers who love it here. The main part of the hostel used to be a mill and the site has been used since 1666 - ask us to show you some of our period features! From floods to smugglers, this hostel has an amazing history and kids and adults alike will be delighted to become part of YHA Boggle Hole's rich heritage.

Fun at Boggle

There's so much to like about YHA Boggle Hole and you'll find plenty of reasons to keep coming back. From entertaining board games in the Quarterdeck Cafe (including Boggle of course) to fairytale woodland trails, it's easy to spend quality time with your family here. We have hobby horses for a hilarious Donkey Derby, a net outside for ball games, plus a pirate dressing up box and cute toys for your little mateys. Look out for the secret spyhole and fairies hiding around the hostel, not to mention a treasure trove of classic good books - choose your favourite from our inspiring title-decorated stairs. We have Wi-Fi installed but we're all about old-fashioned seaside fun, so get nostalgic and build a sandcastle, paddle in the sea or go fossil hunting on the beach outside. Our atmospheric cafe bar is open until late and fantastic for making new friends; it's open to anyone who fancies joining us, so pop in for an ice cream, a steaming cup of hot chocolate or a big slice of cake. However old you are, this hostel brings out the playful side in everyone.

Family Attractions

If you want to adventure beyond our beach, we're super close to some of Yorkshire's favourite seaside locations. Wait until the tide's out and you can walk to Robin Hood's Bay along the beach; it only takes about 20 minutes. This charming fishing village sits on a steep hill and is packed with intriguing alleys, crafty shops, local attractions and marvellous real ale pubs. Don't miss the tiny dinosaur museum (this stretch of coast is famous for its fossils) or the traditional chocolate shop, complete with a delicious chocolate fountain. You can hear more about our folklore and smugglers on the Robin Hood's Bay Ghost Walk too! Further along the Yorkshire coast is Whitby, the kooky seaside town that helped inspire Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula' and a beloved hangout of goths worldwide. Or venture in the opposite direction to Scarborough, a large and thriving town with fab highstreet shopping, a wonderful Sea Life Centre, and a busy seafront of arcades, restaurants and entertainment.

Walk, Cycle, Swim

Step outside for an invigorating swim in the chilly waters near YHA Boggle Hole. We're mentioned in the popular Wild Swimming book as a great place to take the plunge and you can retreat for a lovely warm shower at the hostel afterwards! The cliffs are ideal for a breezy coastal walk and the heather-covered Cleveland Way passes our hostel if you fancy a day on the moors - we're the traditional finish for Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk too. If you're bringing your bike along for the North Sea Trail, we have a cycle store on-site and ten minutes away there's a gentle bike route on a disused railway line.
