Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Blaxhall

Need a lesson in loving the great outdoors? YHA Blaxhall is a former village school, surrounded by nature reserves and with its own green credentials. We're 7 miles from the sea and whether you're a cyclist, wildlife watcher or history buff, there’s lots to do.

Visit the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, discover the Anglo-Saxon secrets of Sutton Hoo or get active with your family.

The Hostel

With friendly staff and all the home comforts you need to relax, YHA Blaxhall gets full marks for active outdoor holidays. Our old school building has been welcoming hostellers for over 50 years and we're a cornerstone of this tiny village's community. We're surrounded by fields and rolling hills, so have a chat to our knowledgeable staff - they're packed with ideas for exploring this extraordinary area. After a long day outdoors, our hostel is the perfect base to settle down and get cosy. Chill out with a board game, catch up with the news on telly, or curl up on the settee with a good book. You can even spend some time just enjoying nature in our small but gorgeous garden. If you're feeling peckish, book a seat at our Supper Club in the evening and join us for a natter and some delicious home-cooked food. There's a fab local pub just down the road from us too, so you can forget your worries with a great pint and a sing song. Whether you're a school trip on a voyage of discovery or a family looking for a Suffolk adventure, YHA Blaxhall always comes top of the class. We're fantastic value too!

Outdoor Activities

Are you a twitcher, botanist or general nature-lover? YHA Blaxhall could be your dream location. This area of Suffolk is packed with nature reserves, amazing landscapes and a wealth of wildlife. Follow the River Alde to Orford Ness - an unusual and internationally-renowned gem of coastal habitats, bizarre plants and migrating birds. You'll find animal conservation happening before your eyes, guided tours of its military history and site-specific works of art. And if you can't get enough of our chirpy locals, RSPB Minsmere is home to some of our rarest species and it's packed with family-friendly activities. If you fancy an adventure through the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB, the Sandlings Walk is a 58-mile trail of memorable terrains. Or, if you're bringing your bike, the Suffolk stretch of National Cycle Route 1 passes near the hostel too. We welcome cyclists with open arms and have a place for you to store your bike. Ask us about the leisurely routes from our doorstep to enjoy quiet country lanes, heather-covered hills, or forests like Rendlesham.

Suffolk Attractions

As well as natural treasures, there are some fab man-made attractions nearby - you'll find everything from concert halls to castles. The famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall is just a five minute drive away and hosts wonderful events throughout the year. Snape also has some fabulous boutiques to browse, along with regular farmers' markets and a food festival. Did you know YHA Blaxhall makes a good base for Latitude Festival too? Or if you fancy a day of Anglo-Saxon discoveries, don't miss the awe-inspiring burial mounds and treasured artefacts of Sutton Hoo. In fact, history buffs and families are spoilt rotten with Framlingham Castle and Orford Castle less than 10 miles away. Both sites are packed with colourful stories, so grab an audio guide for a fun family day out. We've got some stranger attractions too, such as the remains of an Atomic Weapons Research Establishment base on Orford Ness. Rendlesham Forest is even home to the UK's best-known UFO sighting and (if you dare) you can take a trail of where "Britain's Roswell" is said to have happened.

Green Tourism

YHA Blaxhall isn't just an ideal base for exploring the environment, we're doing everything we can to protect it at our hostel too. We're EU Ecolabel certified and part of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Programme, so eco-savvy travellers can feel confident staying with us. Our hostel has moved with the times since we opened in the sixties and we've adapted to be greener. Get involved in reducing waste with our bins in the self-catering kitchen and take part in our local community recycling scheme. We're also partly powered by solar energy and have a garden filled with flowers and creepy crawlies. See how many species of birds and beasties you can spot and enjoy the peace of our quiet area. So what are you waiting for? Get back to nature with a YHA Blaxhall adventure!
