City Shopping in the Sales

Almost as traditional as singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight and taking the Christmas tree down on the 6th January are the January sales. Yes, those iconic sales made up to get rid of the leftover surplus stock from Christmas are a rite of passage for shopaholics and bargain hunters alike.

From the city centres to smaller towns and outlet stores, once the turkey has been digested it’s time to hit those sales and bag yourself a bargain.

Investing in Our Network

Since February 2011, YHA has been working hard to revitalise the network by providing top quality accommodation at a low cost, making it easier for families and individuals to get away and have a real adventure!

YHA Elterwater Sold as Independent Hostel

The sale of YHA Elterwater was completed this week.  The site will now become an independent hostel. We are delighted that Nick will remain as the manager at the site and that the building will continue to welcome guests to a lovely part of the country. YHA has used the money received from the sale to invest in other locations in the Lake District. YHA Ambleside is thriving after a £1.4m investment this year and YHA Blacksail, one of our most iconic Youth Hostels, has just re-opened after extensive renovations.

YHA South Downs Welcomes Royal Visitors

Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh have paid a royal visit to YHA South Downs.

YHA Relinquishes Management At YHA Crowden

YHA is relinquishing our management role at YHA Crowden.  The centre is owned by Rotherham Metropolitan Council and at the end of YHA’s management period they will run the centre.

It has been mutually agreed between Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and YHA that the operation at Crowden Outdoor Education Centre (YHA Crowden) currently operated under a joint management agreement will pass back to the sole management of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council from the 31st March 2014.

YHA Hands Over Salcombe Lease

YHA has been in discussions with the National Trust, from who we lease YHA Salcombe, as our lease is due for renewal in 2014.

We have now agreed with the National Trust that we will surrender our lease at Overbecks in 2014.

YHA has held on-going discussions with the National Trust for some years in an effort to achieve a more sustainable and viable operational model.

Sadly, we cannot find an effective way forward which delivers a financial sustainable Youth Hostel.

First Look At YHA Black Sail Refurbishment

Often referred to as the lonelist hostel in England, if you love an exciting adventure then you'll love YHA Black Sail. The hostel is world famous and much loved for its amazing location and the character of the building.

Only accessible by foot or on bike as it is two and a half miles from the nearest road, the hostel is the epitome of secluded, remote and tranquil. It is the perfect location that most lovers of the great outdoors can only hope to dream about.

YHA Wilderhope Manor re-opens after £500,000 refurbishment

The stunning Grade I Elizabethan manor house, which stands on the slopes of Wenlock Edge, has been tastefully restored to its 16th century glory and now features purpose-made classroom, event bar with 24 hour licence, refurbished bedrooms, showers, washrooms, a self-catering kitchen and an exquisite honeymoon suite.

Mini makeovers

YHA completed minor improvement programmes at YHA Patterdale and YHA Helvellyn in the Lake District National Park in November.

Five wash rooms and the reception area at YHA Patterdale, and three washrooms and the dining room flooring at YHA Helvellyn received attention.

Guests will welcome these improvements, all part of a drive to maintain the standards guests expect at hostels today.

Recently YHA has completed major improvement projects at Rowen, Woody’s Top and Poppit Sands.

YHA Oxford Street Number One

YHA London Oxford Street does it again and is the top hostel in England.

Customer ratings for the hostel in Soho soared sky high after a five month, £1.4 million renovation and refurbishment which set the hostel's feet back on solid ground.

Since the refurbishment and reopening of YHA London Oxford Street in March 2011, it has been ranked the No.1 hostel in England three times and No.2 hostel two times and has broken the 50,000th booking since 1991 as well.
